The Director of Student Support and Outreach at Oberlin College is a full-time, 12-month, continuing staff position in the Division of Student Affairs. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students, this position will provide direct, comprehensive, non-clinical case management for students experiencing challenges in areas such as academics, physical, mental, and emotional health, economic, discipline, personal relationships, and social adjustment.
The Director of Student Support and Outreach will help plan and provide a variety of interventions, referrals, and follow-up services. The Director will also provide outreach and education about the resources and services provided by the Division of Student Affairs to the campus community.
This position will coordinate and facilitate education and outreach efforts to students, faculty, staff, and family members. This position will develop and analyze data gathered to assist in advising the College community on student matters and create a comprehensive assessment process.
This position supervises the Assistant Director of Student Support and Outreach, and together, they are charged with leading the college’s non-clinical case management and student support process.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate follow-up with students who have been referred to Student Support and Outreach and refer students to appropriate campus or community resources; provide appropriate follow-up care/service.
- Serve as a point of contact and liaison for faculty, staff, administrators, students, and family members to express behavioral or safety concerns regarding high-risk and complex student issues; collect and evaluate all facts pertaining to such contacts and formulate appropriate action plans to address concerns.
- Meet one-on-one with students to discuss support needs. Provide information, referrals, and support to walk-in students.
- Maintain appropriate contact with students who withdraw from the College.
- Chair the Student Support Committee, which is a collaborative care team that includes important stakeholders on campus.
- Work with students who are struggling with navigating the resources and support on campus to improve the coordination of care and the retention of students.
- Refer high-risk cases to the campus Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and follow through on the recommended intervention plans.
- Use assessment tools, analyze data, complete assessment reports, and implement program enhancements.
- Participate in research to determine patterns of student departure, analysis of problem areas, and recommend strategies to reduce student attrition.
- Work closely with Counseling and Psychological Services to manage potentially high-risk situations.
- Serve on college committees as appropriate.
- Manage the Student Support and Outreach webpage.
- Partner with Orientation to educate parents and new students on Student Support and Outreach.
- Actively support the College’s commitment to inclusion to achieve and sustain excellence by embodying this commitment as a professional priority.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Students.
Required Qualifications:
- Education: Master’s Degree in Student Affairs Administration, Psychology, Social Work, or related field.
- 5 years of progressive experience and responsibility in higher education or clinical settings, preferably working in a position with direct student contact or case management.
- Understanding of best practices of case management and student advocacy.
- Demonstration and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice for marginalized communities.
- Excellent organizational, group facilitation, interpersonal communication, and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Google Suite, and case management software.
- Commitment to working with diverse groups of individuals, including age, race, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, socioeconomic and educational background, and ability.
- Must be able to handle difficult situations and confidential information with sensitivity and professionalism.
- Must be familiar with Title IX and, if not already trained, receive Title IX/Equity training.
- Experience implementing student behavioral interventions.
- Excellent attention to detail and high standards for quality of work.
