Oberlin is Hiring a Library Assistant III - Science Library Near Oberlin, OH
The Oberlin College Libraries invite applications for the position of Library Assistant III – Science Library Assistant. This is a full-time, continuing, 12-month (1.0) FTE Administrative Assistant position reporting to the STEM Librarian/Head of the Science Library.
Responsibilities
With the oversight of the Associate Director of Public Services and under the supervision of the Head of the Science Library/STEM Librarian, oversees a moderately large staff of student assistant workers, plans and coordinates the work of the department, and performs complex library clerical duties.
Essential Job Functions
Characteristic Duties:
Supervise circulation, reserve, and/or interlibrary loan operations, including the initiation of statistical reports and interpretation of library policies
Supervise clerical operations
Participate in departmental administrative matters, including preparing reports and other activities
Collect, balance, and deposit money received for fines, copy charges, losses paid, and refunds; prepare delinquent borrower reports and process fines, holds, and invoices
Originate and maintain work routines and workflow
May determine when books need to be mended or rebound
Verify work processes including binding and acquisitions
Refer difficult reference or bibliographic questions to appropriate staff
In addition, staff members in this classification may also perform the work characteristics of the other Library Assistant classifications, with the understanding that libraries are constantly changing and particular tasks may also evolve.
Collaborate with Science Center facility managers as needed regarding facility maintenance.
Marginal Job Functions
Required Qualifications
College degree or equivalent library experience, supervisory experience, and superior oral and written communication skills.
Keyboarding speed of 35 wpm with emphasis on accuracy.
Must demonstrate basic science literacy and an understanding of information resources.
Must also have basic computer skills and the ability to learn and use library systems.
Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, public service orientation, and ability to build and maintain working relationships across college and external units with the ability to work aspecified public service-oriented schedule, perform detailed work with accuracy, remain effective under busy and stressful circumstances, and adapt quickly to changing procedures.
Demonstrated ability to train and supervise student assistants.
Desired Qualifications
Library experience, preferably with an automated circulation system, and knowledge of library operations and classification systems. Demonstrated ability and desire to work in a collaborative environment. Demonstrated experience with automated library systems; experience with social media, outreach, and coordinating digital and print documentation. Office management experience including experience overseeing computers, printers, copiers, etc.
Compensation
This is a Pay Group 5 Administrative Assistant position with an hourly rate of $23.95 or the appropriate transfer or contractual rate and includes an excellent benefits package.
