Position Summary

Under the direction of the site Quality Manager or Plant Manager with dotted line to the Director of North American Plant Sanitation, the Sanitation Manager will be responsible for leading the implementation and execution of the Sanitation and Integrated Pest Management Program throughout the manufacturing facility.

The Sanitation Manager will work alongside QA, Operations, and Maintenance to help implement and facilitate quality improvements across the plant.

The role will provide leadership, industrial best practices and direction to the entire facility and serve as a technical liaison between departments.

The role will maintain a positive work environment and ensure compliance with food safety and employee safety standards.

The role will also be responsible for the development, validation and implementation of sanitation practices including SSOPs and cleaning practices, selection & use of cleaning chemicals, and the development and delivery of training materials.

The ideal candidate would demonstrate proficiency in leadership, problem solving, and the ability to influence others to be successful.

They will emphasize the values of trust, integrity, and respect during all communications within the organization and support the roll out of global QMS and initiatives.

Position Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership and supervision for teams to execute cleaning and sanitizing to an effective level as defined by verification methods (visual inspection, ATP, APC testing, and finished product EB monitoring, etc.).
  • Monitors and adjusts the cleaning systems / procedures to ensure optimal cleanliness of processing lines, packaging lines, and building envelopes.
  • Partners with management and production personnel to troubleshoot sanitation problems; recommending changes to improve sanitation policies, procedures, and cleaning effectiveness.
  • Routine assessment (i.e., auditing, KPI reporting,) of cleaning and sanitation program effectiveness for the purposes of continuous improvement.
  • Ensures the necessary sanitation oversight and resources are available to fully support the operation.
  • Works with sanitation services provider to improve sanitation performance and costs.
  • Conducts regular meetings with the plant’s sanitation service provider and plant management to discuss sanitation findings.
  • Analyzes data and trends related to cleaning verification and validation activities, triggering appropriate corrective and preventive actions to ensure adherence to food safety and quality requirements.
  • Collaborates with facility departments to define sanitation activities and resources needed to ensure completion of Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS).

Audit MSS and complete RCCA on issues identified.

Implements and promotes chemical / sanitation safety programs and safe work practices through active participation in safety meetings.

Ensures sanitation team clearly understands all safety rules and regulations, has received appropriate training, and that their work performance is in accordance with all applicable regulations.

  • Partners with the Quality Manager / Plant Manager to develop and oversee the department’s operating budget, ensuring that proper procedures are followed, and expenses are within budgeted guidelines.
  • Emphasizes sanitation opportunities in production areas by communicating and training production personnel on sanitation issues.
  • Validates chemical titrations by creating effective validation programs.
  • Responsible for the development of sanitation personnel through effective training,
  • Maintains a close partnership with the cross functional team at the plant to achieve overall company objectives.
  • Alerts senior management on major issues.
  • Support the broader Q&FS program as required.
  • Ensure a voice at the table for hygienic design of new lines or equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science & Technology, Food Microbiology Biology or related field required.
  • Minimum Five (5) years of experience applying broad sanitation technical knowledge applicable to food safety in a food, meat, dairy, ingredient, or pharmaceutical manufacturing environment required.
  • Progressive sanitation supervision experience in an FDA or USDA regulated food manufacturing facility is preferred.
  • Combination of wet and dry sanitation leadership experience in driving a robust and sustainable sanitation program in CPG manufacturing is required.
  • Leadership ability to effectively lead direct (sanitation) and indirect (operations) crews to complete assigned sanitation tasks.
  • Instills a culture of accountability within the sanitation team.
  • Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills including root cause analysis, risk assessment and corrective action.
  • Proven ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure is required.
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment is required.
  • PCQI, HACCP and Internal Auditor certificates are preferred.
  • Flexible to work weekends, overtime, and holidays as needed.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, appropriately, and respectfully with each member of the organization is required.
  • Ability to adapt to changing organizational and operational needs; ability to lead others through change.
  • Knowledge of sanitation processes and procedures is required.
