Position: Archaeology Technician

Status: Full time, permanent

Location: Ohio History Center, Columbus OH

Salary: $47,840 - 52,000 per year

Benefits: Full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, retirement pension, paid time off and holidays

Summary:

The Archaeological Technician provides support in protecting the underground cultural resources across the Ohio History Connection site network. The role will assist the Archaeology Projects Program Manager in completing archaeological surveys, shovel testing, excavations, construction monitoring, recording, documentation, artifact identification, cataloging, and report writing.

Essential Functions:

  • Conduct all aspects of archaeological (Phase I-III) fieldwork.
  • Conduct archaeological monitoring.
  • Conduct resource photography and mapping in the field, including GPS data collection.
  • Perform processing and cataloging of collections recovered during projects.
  • Contribute to technical reports of the results of archaeological fieldwork.
  • Conduct research and literature reviews.
  • Prepare site forms.
  • Frequent in-state travel, potentially overnight for extended periods of time.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • 1-3 year of archaeological field and/or lab experience in a CRM, academic, or museum setting.
  • Familiarity with Midwest pre-contact and post-contact archaeology

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Knowledge of historic preservation laws and policies, including NHPA and NAGPRA.
  • Knowledge of and experience with artifact identification, cataloging, and analysis.
  • Experience conducting archival research and background record reviews.
  • Experience with Trimble products and GIS software.
  • A demonstrated ability to write clearly and professionally.
  • Ability to work effectively with stakeholders and colleagues with differing perspective on archaeological practices.
