Ohio History Connection is Hiring a Fall 2024 Intern -Curatorial Department Near Columbus, OH

Position: Intern, Curatorial DepartmentType: Unpaid Internship Schedule: Monday, September 9 - Friday, December 6, 2024Location: Columbus, OHReports to: Manager, Curatorial DepartmentApplication Period: Applications will be accepted until June 14, 2024. About Ohio History ConnectionThe Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio's stories. Chartered in 1885, the OHC carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state's history. This includes housing the state historic preservation office, the official state archives, local history office and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.
SummaryThe Curatorial Department of the Ohio History Connection is committed to providing internships that build practical skills in museum work. The Curatorial Department internship is a professional development program designed to provide the opportunity for hands-on collections experience. The work will focus on packing history and/or natural history objects. The intern will gain a comprehensive understanding of modern collections management aligned with best practices in stewardship, including, but not limited to, object handling, storage, and labeling. The Curatorial Department intern will learn and apply organizational and professional standards for ethics, cultural responsiveness, and equity.
Essential Functions
  • Assist history or natural history curators with locating, packing, and storing of collections in preparation for artifact move to a new collections care facility.
  • Create and/or modify boxes and mounts for long-term storage of collections items.
  • Create and/or modify boxes and mounts for moving artifacts to new collections care facility.
Required Education, Skills, Experience
  • Must be enrolled in an academic program OR a recent graduate from an academic program (within one year).
  • Ability to safely handle small and/or fragile objects and specimens.
  • Ability to lift storage boxes and climb ladders.
Required Competencies
  • Works well both independently and with and in support of colleagues to complete work.
  • A desire to gain knowledge and develop skills to tackle challenges and apply to future experiences.
Education And Experience Outcomes
  • Knowledge of museum best practices and procedures for specific kinds of objects or specimens.
  • Experience in collections handling, housing, and tracking.
Other Requirements
  • Must complete a background check and internship onboarding paperwork
  • Must create and account, log internships hours and sign up for internship shifts via Track it Forward
  • Must present at the internship summit
  • Attend professional development opportunities and meetings when requested
