Olympia School District is Hiring an Olympia - Secondary Counselor (ORLA) 2022-23 Near Tumwater, WA

Job Purpose Statement/s: The position of 6-12 Counselor at ORLA works with students in all programs of the Olympia Regional Learning Academy (ORLA). In addition to academic guidance and scheduling, the counselor will provide assistance to students/families in conflict resolution, mental health related issues and other issues that may be interfering with their success in school. The Counselor will also facilitate High School and Beyond plans and help with school-wide standardized testing.

This 1.0 FTE position will work Monday - Friday, 7.0 hours per day, for the 2022-23 school year only.

Preference given to applicants with counseling experience and a background, passion, or experience in social justice and/or equity work.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Collaborates with students and families in the creation of student schedules.
  • Monitors student progress toward meeting all OSD graduation requirements.
  • Organizes opportunities for students to connect with post-secondary institutions, including colleges and universities, scholarship and financial aid, and any other post-secondary planning necessary to support students.
  • Coordinates shared enrollment between ORLA and other institutions such as Running Start, New Market, and/or other OSD schools.
  • Supports implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).
  • Coordinates with teachers, resource specialists, and/or community (e.g. service clubs, courts, child protective services, etc.) for the purpose of providing requested information, gaining needed information and/or making recommendations/referrals.
  • Develops various special programs (e.g. curriculum night, career fairs, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to assist students and families.
  • Coordinates with other school and district personnel for the purpose of supporting students in coursework affiliated with ORLA.
  • Prepares documentation (e.g. observations, progress, contacts with parents, teachers, outside professionals, etc.) for the purpose of providing support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information.
  • Teach SEL, anti-bullying, and substance abuse lessons for grades 6-12.
  • Presents information on various topics (e.g. behavior management, orientation, classroom presentations, etc.) for the purpose of providing required information and/or advice.
  • Teaches Career and College readiness curriculum associated with High School & Beyond Plan for middle school students.
  • Collects & Analyzes relevant data to build interventions for struggling students.
  • Fluent in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES), trauma-informed practices related to students, staff, and families, cultural responsiveness, and critical conversations.
  • Participates in various extra-curricular school and/or community activities for the purpose of providing supervision and/or representing school at such events.
  • Supervises assigned programs (e.g. HSBP, MTSS, 504 plans, SEL implementation, etc.) for the purpose of monitoring performance, providing for professional growth and achieving overall curriculum objectives.
  • Facilitator of small groups, 6-12, and able to provide classroom lessons.
  • Participates in relevant professional development in order to stay abreast of and implement current best practices and/or state mandates.
  • Knowledgeable and able to partner with Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).
