Job Title: Executive Director, Professional Learning and Development
Location: Teacher Administrative Center (TAC), 3215 Cuming St. Omaha, NE 68131
Reports To: Chief School Improvement Officer
Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 12-month / Exempt
Salary Schedule: Non-negotiated 27E, commensurate with education and experience
Position Purpose: General responsibilities include designing, developing, leading, and monitoring the implementation of district wide professional development systems and programs. This position also oversees and facilitates leadership development programming in the school district. The Executive Director provides supervisory duties to the Office of Professional Learning and Development including employee management and long-range planning, the oversight of grant programs and budget responsibilities.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Develop and integrate a vision for professional learning into district wide systems of professional learning in alignment with the strategic plan of action and continuous improvement needs.
  • Lead cross-departmental planning teams and workgroups to develop and implement processes for cohesive professional learning systems district wide.
  • Design and oversee comprehensive professional learning programs aligned with district goals.
  • Formulate and execute long-term plans to enhance teacher and staff professional development.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and evaluate leadership development programs at all levels to prepare future leaders for the Omaha Public Schools.
  • Lead coordination and facilitation of the LAUNCH (certified), iLEAD, Bilingual Leader Program, Teacher Leader programming, and LEAD Academy Leadership (classified) programs.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor project/program-based grants that support leadership development and professional learning.
  • Lead cross-departmental teams in planning and implementing Administrators/Supervisors Meetings and other district-required meetings.
  • Encourage and support development and oversee virtual and blended professional learning opportunities to enhance accessibility and engagement.
  • Lead and coordination of various district events as assigned.
  • Lead and support Office of Professional Learning staff to implement and monitor professional development programs.
  • Identify and address disparities in professional development opportunities and outcomes among different groups of educators.
  • Coordinate with schools and TAC Departments, e.g., Principal Supervisors, Curriculum and Instruction Support, Student Information Services, Instructional Management Services, and Research to implement various programs.
  • Works collaboratively with appropriate staff members to gather and analyze data regarding professional development, and various other programs as assigned.
  • Tracks data, creates reports and presents on effectiveness of professional learning and/or grants within areas of responsibility.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement by staying abreast of current trends, research, and best practices in professional learning and education.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Minimum of Masterâs Degree with appropriate course work in areas of administration, supervision, human relations and other related fields.
  • Valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate with endorsement in area of administration and supervision required.
  • Understanding of improvement science and its application to professional learning and organizational change.
  • Experience using Canvas and/or Canvas Catalog as a Learning Management System preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with, and provide guidance to diverse staff, students, parents, and community members.
  • Strong understanding of professional learning standards and evidence-based practices, including inclusive and culturally responsive professional learning practices.
  • Strong ability to lead and manage a team of diverse professional and classified staff members.
  • Effective project management skills to oversee multiple initiatives and program simultaneously.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage time and a variety of responsibilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and administrators to develop and implement uses of educational best practices in area of diversity.
  • Ability to lead a team to address challenges, drive decision making, and implement innovative solutions.
  • Displays a significant degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of public school leadershipand educational trends and needs related to professional learning in urban PK-12 school districts.
  • Capable of working effectively and cooperatively with people from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated skills provide coaching and mentoring to support professional growth of aspiring leaders.
  • Ability to perform a variety of tasks, changing assignments on short notice, performing under deadlines with pressure, ability to work in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Ability to conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearance.
Additional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the Chief School Improvement Officer and other Central Office Administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Equipment: This position may require the ability to use interactive presentation technology, and a variety of electronic devices in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Must always comply with OPSâs guidelines for equipment use.
Travel: Frequent travel within the metro area will be required. Occasional travel outside of the metro area may be required.

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Occasional extended hours will be required by the position and/or the supervisor.
  • Must have organization, time management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to read and use information from written materials and visual displays.
  • Ability to work in standing/walking positions frequently throughout the work shift.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, and maintain balance while performing job related tasks.
  • Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
  • Additional demands may be required upon request from the Supervisor.
Interrelations
  • Contact with personnel within the district and other stakeholders.
  • Will be working under the indirect supervision of department administration in order to complete day to day tasks.
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Must understand and respond appropriately to stakeholder needs and maintain a positive attitude with all.
  • Expected to interact with all internal and external stakeholders in a friendly, professional manner and provide quick, responsive service.
Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employeeâs supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.
Terms of EmploymentThis position is treated as a full-time exempt certified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment or teaching in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.
Terms Of Employment Are Contingent Upon
  • Verification of a valid Nebraska Teaching License or other required license.
  • A background check which demonstrates background is acceptable for the position sought and working with or around students.
  • Verification of U.S. Citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required by federal law for your position).
  • Execution and delivery to OPS of an Administrator Contract presented by OPS.
