Job Title: Teaching and Learning Consultant, Secondary English Language Arts
Location: Teacher Administrative Center, 3215 Cuming Street, Omaha, NE 68131
Department of Curriculum and Instruction Support
Reports To: Executive Director of Secondary Education
Work Schedule/FLSA Status: 261 Day, 12-month / Exempt
Salary Schedule: Omaha School Administrators Association (OSAA) Level 6 / commensurate with education and experience
Position Purpose: The Teaching and Learning Consultant for Secondary English Language Arts in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction Support is responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of the English Language Arts curriculum to promote student learning and teacher effectiveness. This individual will exhibit strong standards of professional ethics when relating to staff, students, parents, administration, and the community.
The purpose of the Secondary English Language Arts is to assist students in reaching grade-level proficiency in the Nebraska College and Career-Ready Standards for English Language Arts by providing Tier I instruction in grade-level reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
  • Identify and evaluate new and emerging trends in adolescent literacy and communicate that information to school staff.
  • Follow district guidelines detailed in the Curriculum Development Cycle as they pertain to the field testing and adoption of new materials.
  • Facilitate, review, and approve curriculum development including curriculum guides and common assessments for all English Language Arts courses and electives including journalism and drama, utilizing national, state, and local standards.
  • Review, revise, and maintain a list of approved resources.
  • Work with principals, program directors, curriculum specialists, instructional facilitators, and English Language Arts teachers to assure standardization and equity of resources.
  • Design, deliver, and/or oversee district professional development opportunities throughout the school year including New Teacher Institute, Curriculum Days, Articulation Day, summer workshops, and curriculum writing.
  • Regularly collect feedback from teachers to proactively plan applicable professional development.
  • Coach English Language Arts teachers in instructional best practices.
  • Collaborate with IMS to provide rostering and troubleshooting support for online resources.
  • Review, revise, and maintain the English Language Arts course codes and descriptions and ensure they align with state course codes and teacher endorsements.
  • Maintain updated District Placement Guidelines for all English Language Arts honors and AP courses.
  • Using available data, assist schools in identifying students in need of additional support and additional instructional practices to differentiate according to student needs.
  • Oversee off-formula funds for journalism and drama.
  • Apply for and manage grants to support literacy.
  • Provide appraisal support to schools.
  • Work collectively with Teaching and Learning Consultants for collaboration and alignment of various projects.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Minimum of a masterâs degree with appropriate coursework in educational administration, English or English Language Arts required.
  • A valid Nebraska Teaching Certificate with endorsements in English or English Language Arts and administration/supervision required.
  • Minimum of five years successful teaching experience; previous experience as an English Language Arts teacher is required and experience in administration and supervision is preferred.
  • Ability to monitor the implementation of the curriculum in all English Language Arts classrooms.
  • Exemplary organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize organizational skills for effective facilitation and implementation of the English Language Arts curriculum.
  • Skills which foster a team environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, staff, and community members.
  • Knowledge of current research, standards, assessments, and best practices of instruction in English Language Arts education; and the ability to develop curriculum and assessments.
  • Ability to organize and set priorities.
  • Willingness and demonstrated abilities conducive to the continuous quest for quality.
  • Ability to conform to proper standards of professional dress and appearance.
  • Knowledge of OPSâs mission, purpose, goals, and the role of every employee in achieving each of them.
  • Skills pertinent to positive human relationships and the ability to work effectively with students, parents, community agencies, members of the instructional staff, classroom teachers and administrators.
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
Additional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.
Equipment: This position may require the ability to use interactive presentation technology, and a variety of electronic devices in addition to basic office equipment such as computers, copiers, scanners, and fax machine. Must always comply with OPSâs guidelines for equipment use.
Travel: Travel between OPS school buildings and the Central Office will be required.

Employee Punctuality and Appearance
  • In order for schools to operate effectively, employees are expected to perform all assigned duties and work all scheduled hours during each designated workday, unless the employee has received approved leave.
  • Any deviation from assigned hours must have prior approval from the employeeâs supervisor or building administrator.
  • All employees are required to report to work dressed in a manner that reflects a positive image of Omaha Public Schools and is appropriate for their position.
Terms of EmploymentThis position is treated as a full-time exempt certified position. The terms of your employment will be governed by applicable state laws regulating employment or teaching in a Nebraska public school and Board of Education policies, as those laws and policies may change from time to time. If your position is represented by a collective bargaining representative, then your employment will also be governed by a negotiated agreement between OPS and that collective bargaining representative.
Terms Of Employment Are Contingent Upon
  • Verification of a valid Nebraska Teaching License or other required license.
  • A background check which demonstrates background is acceptable for the position sought and working with or around students.
  • Verification of U.S. Citizenship or legal authorization to work in the United States.
  • Successful completion of a tuberculosis skin test (if required by federal law for your position).
  • Execution and delivery to OPS of an Administrator Contract presented by OPS.
