Primary Function: Maintenance Technician:
The Plant Mechanic’s primary function is to inspect, install, repair and make adjustments to all types of mechanical equipment and plant property. To lubricate the moving parts and wearing surfaces of all plant equipment.
Tools & Equipment: Maintenance Technician:
Mechanic’s hand tools, mechanical hoists, pipe tools, carpenter’s tools, burning and welding equipment, special maintenance tools, reciprocating saws, shears, drill presses, hand and floor grinder, measuring devices, lift truck, grease guns, lubricating equipment, etc.
Materials: Maintenance Technician:
Plant mechanical equipment, repair parts, lubricants, hardware, packing, building supplies, oils, solvents, grease fittings, etc.
Responsibilities: Maintenance Technician:
  • Receives instructions covering the scheduled emergency repair, installation, and work to be done.
  • Interprets drawings and sketches.
  • Inspects equipment and refractory presses for defects such as misalignment, wear, insufficient lubrication, etc.
  • Determines the best way of making repairs to minimize interruption of production.
  • Advises when immediate shutdown of equipment is necessary to minimize damage or when temporarily continued operation will have no harmful effect.
  • Dismantles all types of mechanical equipment, refractory presses, and press equipment, replaces, or repairs faulty parts and reassembles and adjusts equipment.
  • Makes repairs to and maintains company property such as buildings, roads, yards, sanitation facilities and piping.
  • Serves as mechanic to a particular department performing such work as: set blades and dies, adjust and repair machinery, etc.
  • Uses burning equipment and electric acetylene welding equipment as required.
  • Uses carpenter’s tools to construct and repair wood objects such as benches, platforms, handrails, and tables.
  • Operates simple machine tools such as drill presses, hand and floor grinders, shears, saws, etc.
  • Performs simple rigging as required.
  • Operates automotive equipment when necessary for own use.
  • Lubricates mechanical equipment according to outlined procedure or manufacturer's specifications.
  • Maintains oil supply and reports same to supervision when supply is low.
  • Cleans grease fittings and replaces as required.
  • Changes press outfits, shims, and adjusts to proper size; adjusts pads, chargers, spray pipes, wiper bars, stop bolts, pressure wheels, springs, washers, bolts, air cylinders.
  • Disassembles, cleans, and prepares liners, filler blocks, box beams and pads for assembly; performs grinding as required.
  • Fits, aligns, and assembles mold boxes. Checks mold boxes by inserting appropriate pad into box.
  • Places inserts and ball plugs in pads.
  • Places press boxes, liner holders, pads, steels, and plungers in proper storage area.
  • Marks identification on mold boxes as required.
  • Works from instruction and parts manuals of various equipment.
  • Inspects and must be able to understand and locate trouble of equipment.
  • Generally, maintains all equipment.
  • Makes repairs on tools and equipment.
  • Cleans motor assemblies and chassis of automotive equipment and paints when necessary.
  • Cleans up and keeps equipment and work areas in an orderly condition and observes all safety rules.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Other Attributes: Maintenance Technician:
  • Two-year degree in Mechanical Maintenance related field or Journeyman’s card in Mechanical Maintenance related field and one year of Industrial Maintenance experience preferred.
  • Arithmetic skills equivalent to four years of high school
  • Understanding of English and Metric systems of measurement
  • Must be able to pass the plant mechanic written test with a minimum score of 60%
