POSITION TITLE: Education Specialist
REPORTS TO: Director of Early Childhood Initiatives
BEGINNING DATE: Open Until Filled
NATURE OF WORK:
The Education Specialist will work directly with classroom teachers, administration, and preschool staff in a non-evaluative role to provide the necessary guidance, professional development, resources, support, coaching and feedback to implement effective practices, addressing the most prominent needs of the school(s), as well as maintaining time lines for program requirements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Ability to survey, compile, facilitate, and deliver research-based and high-quality professional development in strict alignment with the district improvement plan to train teachers in the correct use of research-based curriculum in the classroom setting.
  • Ability to assist families and staff in providing appropriate educational opportunities for children.
  • Working knowledge of Teaching Strategies Gold, Creative Curriculum, NC Preschool Pyramid Model and Head Start CLASS observation tool.
  • Knowledge of Child Care Rules and Head Start Program Performance Standards.
  • Working knowledge of instructional, behavioral, sensory, and environmental strategies for supporting students with children with disabilities in the Least Restrictive Environment.
  • Ability to support school staff and administrators to gather, compile and interpret data for effective implementation of data teams to support student learning and growth.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in oral and written forms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with employees, school personnel and the public.
  • Ability to work with highly diverse populations.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood and current teaching license
  • At least three years of successful teaching experience (required)
  • Experience in leadership roles (preferred)
  • Experience in working with teachers/early childhood staff (preferred)
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 months
SALARY: State Teacher Salary Schedule
FLSA Status: Exempt
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide professional development on researched-based instructional practices.
  • Monitor and ensure implementation of all phases of preschool curriculum: Creative Curriculum, Teaching Strategies, Goal, and Second Step.
  • Assist teaching staff with classroom set-up and daily scheduling to ensure compliance with ECERS and Child Care Licensing Rules.
  • Assist teaching staff in developing effective classroom management techniques and utilizing the NCPPM to develop a supportive emotional and social environment in the classroom.
  • Monitor teacher lesson plans and Teaching Strategies Gold data entry to assist teaching staff with accurate assessment and generate outcomes to assess progress.
  • Work with PreK teachers in small groups and one-on-one to analyze student assessment data, reflect on instruction, and plan instructional activities based on student need using items such as Teaching Strategies.
  • Conduct CLASS observations, schedule classroom visits, complete safety checklists and classroom monitoring checklists.
  • Support teachers and teacher assistants through an approved Coaching model.
  • Work with all preschool departments to ensure comprehensive educational services are provided for preschool students.
  • Participate in all activities associated with the NC Preschool Pyramid Model and early intervention program.
  • Monitor the implementation of instructional strategies and instructional performance to ensure fidelity to guided researched-based instructional practices.
  • Model lessons with proven, research-based best teaching practices and per teacher/administrator request or student need.
  • Work with preschool staff to maintain current timelines and compliance of Child Care Rules and Head Start guidelines.
  • Work collaboratively with lead instructional personnel at the school and district level.
  • Attend professional learning opportunities to support and enhance job skills in supporting and coaching instructional staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Director.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The ability to be physically active, which includes, but is not limited to, standing, pushing, pulling, squatting, bending, sitting, walking.
  • Must be able to stand, sit, or walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds routinely and 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Must be able to visually, auditorily, and physically monitor student performance and conduct.
  • Must be able to facilitate the evacuation of students during emergency situations and/or drills.
  • Must be able to drive to variety of school sites.
