About the Role
Pipetting is at the heart of Opentrons robotics. Enabling higher performance, higher quality, and easier to use pipettes is a critical aspect of Opentrons’ continued growth as an industry leader in life science automation. The pipette team lead is responsible for leading a team of cross departmental engineers through next generation pipette research, development and manufacturing. This is a hands-on role while working with mechanical, electrical, software and test engineers to develop the best possible performing pipette in a world-changing biotech company. This is an exciting position for someone who is passionate about revolutionizing the life science industry while collaborating with exceptional cross-functional teams across the globe.
This is a full-time, on-site position at our Long Island City (Queens) headquarters. The Pipette Team Lead reports to the Director of Hardware Engineering.

What You Will Do
  • Manage priorities of a cross functional team of mechanical, electrical, software and test engineers.
  • Hands-on development of pipettes within team inclusive of theory, prototyping, testing & design.
  • Work closely with stakeholders from engineering, product and science to define future roadmaps.
  • Own project scheduling, definition of major milestones, and organization of discussions around key decision points.
  • Own execution of team activities needed to meet milestones.
  • Manage resources between next gen improvements against sustaining work or field issues.
  • Guide team through NPI from early R&D to product shipping.
  • Establish lean yet solid internal project management methodologies; inclusive of phase-driven milestones, communication of key statuses and verification of goals.

Who We Are Looking For
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience
Experience:
  • Minimum of 7 years experience in an engineering role with product development.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience with microfluidics.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong experience with product development cycles and demonstrated history of bringing dozens of complex large scale products and features from concept to market.
  • Demonstrated experience in microfluidics, with strong experiences in linear motion, thermodynamics, electric motors, and similar relevant domains.
  • Strong project leadership experience. Able to handle a large variety of projects simultaneously while maintaining highest priority items on track.
  • Strong experience collaborating with software/embedded teams and systems engineers.
  • Strong experience with testing processes and test reports.
  • Strong experience with root cause analysis.

Bonus Qualifications

  • Experience in life sciences or lab automation
  • Experience with pipette tip consumables
  • Product development experience with linear motion machines (CNC, 3D printers or similar)
  • Experience writing python scripts
  • Experience with PCBA development and electrical debugging tools.
  • Experience in manufacturing or contract manufacturing

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment
  • Limited physical effort required

Compensation Range:
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $145,000 and $190,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience. We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. Following employment, growth beyond the hiring range is possible based on performance.
