Responsibilities

The Systems Engineer understands the needs of the automotive customers for our exterior lighting products and translates them into actionable requirements for the functional disciplines within the product development team - e.g. electrical, mechanical, software, optical, regulatory, reliability, validation, etc. The system engineer leads the requirements analysis and risk assessment (DFMEA) and confirms the final requirements are verified/validated, ensuring that the end product meets what the customer expected.

  • Understand and document customer needs and requirements starting the quote phase and upon award of the program. Manage and negotiate customer requirements, change requests, and unwritten expectations through the project life through launch.
  • Develop the system requirements based upon and traced to the customer requirements for mechanical, electrical, optical and software disciplines. Further develop the system requirements based on regulatory market requirements (F/CMVSS, ECE, CCC) and internal PO Lighting requirements (design guidelines, standard modules).
  • Allocate each requirements to each affected discipline.
  • Develop system architecture in an unambiguous, clear, and understandable way that electrical, mechanical, optical, software, regulatory and validation engineers know exactly what needs to be done to meet customer expectations.
  • Leads and moderates cross functional technical workshops including requirements review both internally and with the customer.
  • Develop, with the support of the customer and functional disciplines, the system level DFMEA for the product. Collaborate with functional teams to develop sub-system and component DFMEAs as needed.
  • Identify potential critical and significant characteristics that must be document in the deign record and cascaded to manufacturing for the PFMEA.
  • Document the requirements elicitation, allocation, analysis and traceability using DOOR NG or equivalent requirement management system.
  • Create and maintain project documentation, such as:
  • System requirements specification
  • System architecture definition tailored to the specific project
  • System test plan
  • Other documents, as needed
  • Collaborate with validation and test engineers to develop test procedures, analysis or test tools, execute functional and system testing
  • Support validation test and manufacture of the project including the cascade of requirements to the manufacturing and quality teams responsible to develop in-line functional testers, EOL tester equipment or other product quality tools.
  • Identify projects lessons learned and incorporate these lessons into baseline requirements, system architecture and DFMEA documents for use on future projects.
  • Support creation of:
  • Detailed discipline specific design descriptions
  • Mechanical/Optical/Electrical and hardware/software interface specifications
  • 8D reports
  • Timing Plans
  • Other documents, as needed

Education Requirement(s)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering / Software Engineering / Electrical Engineering / Computer Science or equivalent required.
  • Master degree preferred.

Experience Requirement(s)

  • 4 years’ experience with system engineering in the automotive industry in the areas of systems engineering, requirements analysis and/or DFMEA.
  • Strong communication skills in visualization and verbal explanation. Strong personality in Systems Engineering techniques to proactively close knowledge gaps (structured interview, systems archeology, observation and elicitation)
  • Willingness to engage with the development team on a regular basis to drive project progress. Willingness to work independently when needed
  • Broad knowledge of automotive lighting products is desired: mechanical design, optical design, electronics hardware design and software integration, including knowledge of the associated vehicle architectures.
  • Exposure to lighting regulations such as FMVSS, CMVSS, ECE and CCC.
  • Experience in both product design and design validation.
  • Experience in requirement management tools such as DOORS NG, Polarion or equivalent.
  • Experience in performing system risk assessment techniques such AIAG and/or VDA FMEA and FTA. Experience with DFMEA software such as APIS IQ-RM or equivalent.
  • Familiar with automotive Safety (ISO-26262) and Cyber Security (ISO-21434) norms
  • Program Management / Project Management Skills
  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult
  • Recognizable empathy, with team spirit, and with high level of assertiveness.

  • Some travel maybe required; overtime expected including several evening meetings with global teams.
