FLEET TECHNICIAN I)

SALARY INFORMATION

In addition to performance-based merit increases, this position is scheduled to receive salary range increases on the following dates :

Effective June 28, 2024 - 4.00% increase

Effective June 27, 2025 - 3.75% increase

Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The County of Orange Public Works has an excellent opportunity for a skilled Collision Auto Body Technician I (Fleet Technician I).

This position provides vehicle paint and body support to the Sheriff's Department emergency vehicles, and to all other agency / department vehicles in the County of Orange.

OC Public Works is looking for a body shop helper under direction of journeyman level technician(s) to :

Straighten and repair automobile and heavy equipment fenders, body panels and metal surfaces; remove dents and welds tears in surfaces;

fill rough areas and grind / sand surfaces; repair and fabricate fiberglass parts and surfaces

  • Fine sand and prime coat exterior and interior automobile and equipment surfaces in preparation for finish painting
  • Mix, match and apply paint with a spray gun
  • Build, repair and / or replace wood sideboards and stakes on truck beds
  • Install specialized equipment such as sirens, lights, mounts and brackets including wiring installations
  • Repair or replace door hinges, locks, glass run channels, windows, windshields and allied parts
  • Repair and replace interior trim and upholstery
  • Perform electric arc, acetylene, heliarc, and mig wire feed welding to modify and repair damaged vehicles and equipment
  • Install basic automotive wiring systems.
  • Fabricate modifications to vehicles and equipment from sheet metal to alter original configurations

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

The ideal candidate will possess one (1) year of technical experience or a Certificate of Completion of body shop mechanic instruction from an adult school, vocational school, or specialized industrial program.

In addition, the ideal candidate will possess or perform as a helper in the following core competencies :

Industry Knowledge

  • Frame and suspension
  • Testing considerations and techniques necessary to ensure the reliability and safety of a vehicle's frame, chassis and running gear
  • Methods, tools and equipment used in body and fender repair work
  • Methods, tools and equipment and materials used in the painting and finishing of automobiles, trucks and other equipment
  • Repairing or replacing door hinges, locks, glass run channels, window, windshields and align parts
  • Repairing and replacing interior trim and upholstery
  • Performing metal fabrication work, such as sheet metal modifications to vehicles and equipment to alter original configurations
  • Installing basic automotive wiring systems

Technical Expertise

  • Install specialized equipment such as sirens, lights, mounts and brackets, including wiring installations
  • Perform body and fender work as a helper level to include repairing, modifying or painting automobiles, trucks and other equipment
  • Set up and operate electric arc, heliarc and acetylene welding equipment in order to accomplish precision welding on various types of metals which are characteristic of automobile repair work
  • Make itemized repair estimates by identifying the cost and parts necessary to repair damaged equipment
  • Set up and operate frame machine with gauges

Oral and Written Communication

  • Work independently from written and oral instructions, diagrams, schematics, sketches, specifications and rough drafts
  • Use parts manuals to look up and record information on replacement materials required in body and fender repair work
  • Communicate effectively in writing and orally
  • Complete order forms and other documents correctly
  • Place orders orally in a clear, concise and understandable manner

Education and Experience

Certificate of completion of automotive mechanic instruction from an adult school, vocational school, or specialized industrial program.

One (1) year of journey level technical experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge and abilities referenced above.

License Required

A valid California Class C Driver's License by date of appointment.

Special Requirements

Incumbents are expected to provide their own hand tools.

Physical Requirements

  • Positions in this class typically require : body mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, push, pull, or crawl; ability to move distances within and between warehouses, offices, and field locations;
  • lift or move up to 50 pounds occasionally, and / or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects; climb stairs and ladders, and work, traverse, and balance atop of the stairs;
  • ability to mount and dismount forklift and / or truck; vision efficient to read up close and at distances over 20 feet, and distinguish colors to identify road signs and signals, read color wire schematics, identify correct ordered parts, and properly identify wire harness color coding;
  • ability to detect, distinguish, and determine odors; requires the ability to speak and hear well enough to communicate clearly and understandably in person to individuals and groups;
  • possess manual dexterity sufficient to use hands, arms, and shoulders repetitively and without limitation to range and motion to operate keyboards, tools, and specialized equipment;

ability to drive work vehicles on uneven roads.

Environmental and Working Conditions

Position assignments include outdoor and indoor field, yards, office settings, and shop locations. Work location shops and field conditions are subject to varying weather conditions, heat variance from an open air work shop and field service locations, and uneven terrain due to equipment location.

Incumbents may be exposed to dust and chemicals from equipment being maintained, including paint line stripper, vegetation spray rigs, exhaust fumes from running equipment, gases, and fluids.

May be exposed to intense noise levels from the shop, machinery, and equipment. May be required to wear safety equipment, including safety shoes and boots, glasses and face shields, ear plugs and muffs, protective gloves, and rain attire.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Eligible List

Once the assessments have been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
