ORCHARD VIEW ELEMENTARY is Hiring a Special Education Assistant - 6.5 hrs/day Near Middlebury, IN

JOB GOALS: Provide students needing additional support and assistance a smooth functioning class environment, which allows them to take full advantage of the instructional program and the available resource materials.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Under supervision of licensed teacher and building principal, help to plan, prepare and supervise classroom activities that directly or indirectly serve academically challenged students or students needing additional support or assistance.
  2. Work with small groups of students to reinforce material initially introduced by the teacher.
  3. Assist individual students in need of special attention.
  4. Supervise drill work, guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work for identified students as arranged by the teacher.
  5. Check notebooks, correct papers, supervise testing and make up work of assigned students.
  6. Assist small groups of students with such skills as reading.
  7. Keep an assignment notebook with daily homework assignments for students and record missing assignments.
  8. Assist with the facilitation of academic support for students without an IEP who need extra support with homework and organization and perform weekly grade checks.
  9. Assist students with homework, organization and grade checks in the Guided Practice Resource Room. Use whiteboard, dry-erase markers and computers to help re-teach and assist in learning, as assigned.
  10. Assist with discipline and questions in the regular classroom. Assist with re-teaching and answering questions in Science Lab environments as assigned.
  11. Work with small groups of students in the resource rooms, as assigned.
  12. Read tests and quizzes, as assigned.
  13. Pull out students in Math who have missed one or more days to go over notes and to provide assistance to improve understanding of homework, as assigned.
  14. Direct students in the proper use of computers for assignments, tests, and quizzes, as assigned.
  15. Provide modifications to assignments as needed under the direction of the grade-level Special Education teacher.
  16. Direct students to begin their starter/daily immediately at the beginning of the class period. Help the teacher by ensuring that students are staying busy at all times during work time.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Assistants hired after January 8, 2006, must have:

- Completed two (2) or more years of study at an institution of higher education; or

- Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; or

- Passed the Para Pro

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of children, parents, or employees of the School Corporation.

MATHEMATICAL SKILL:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

The employee should be able to use the following machines, tools, equipment, and work aids, which may be representative, but not all inclusive, of those commonly associated with this type of work: computer, computer software, pointer, projector, public address system, blackboard, promethean board, charts, diagrams, examinations, manuals, maps, publications, reference books, textbooks. The employee must maintain confidentiality, be able to communicate with students from diverse backgrounds, maintain a positive relationship with other staff, parents, and students.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

187 days per year. Salary and benefits as per Classified Policy.

EVALUATION:

An evaluation will be done on the employee's performance on an annual basis.
