The Team
The OHS Philanthropy Team is responsible for solicitating gifts from individuals, corporations, and foundations. The Philanthropy Team is part of the Advancement Department, along with the Advancement Operations, Planned Giving, and Marketing & Communications teams. This team collaborates closely with the broader Advancement Team, the CEO, and other key stakeholders across the organization to deepen donor engagement and increase support for OHS priorities through various channels and tactics.
The Position
The Manager, Philanthropy (Major Gifts) is a member of the Philanthropy Team and is responsible for soliciting annual fund gifts, unrestricted and some restricted gifts, and capital gifts that will increase participation and financial support to OHS. The primary role of the Manager, Philanthropy (Major Gifts) is to help donors deepen their relationships with OHS in support of this expanded work and will be responsible for moving a large portfolio of donors and prospects through the moves management cycle using relationship-driven strategies and face-to-face visits.

INFLUENCE & REPRESENTATION
  • Represent OHS, as requested, at key stakeholder and sectorial meetings or engagements.
  • Communicate effectively to executive, and other stakeholder groups to ensure they are informed and able to actively engage.
  • Liaise with and maintain productive relationships with all stakeholders, including other departments, and donors; build mutually rewarding professional relationships inside OHS at all levels.
  • Leverage our best practices externally and grow OHS' reputation as a leader in this space by identifying opportunities to share the process and results in the broader animal welfare sector through presentations, whitepapers, blogs, etc.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop strategy, stewardship/cultivation plans and activities for managing and engaging in meaningful and sustained relationships with a diverse portfolio of high-net-worth individuals (current and prospects with funds above $10,000) to encourage and inform their charitable giving.
  • With your own donor portfolio, develop strategic, face-to-face relationships with new and existing high value supporters, delivering excellent stewardship and cultivation, deepening supporters' relationships with OHS and asking at the right time for multi-year financial support.
  • Increases the number of major donors and the dollars raised from major donors through qualify new and existing donors and strengthening engagement through a series of documented visits and strategic communication.
  • Works with the Director, Philanthropy to establish performance goals; monitors progress against them and devises strategies to ensure success in meeting them.
  • Works collaboratively with other OHS team members throughout the organization to be metrics driven, to meet or exceed team and personal financial goals, and engage in an elevated level of prospect contact.
  • Articulates and implements strategies for communicating with donors; drafts and customizes correspondence, proposals, and other written materials for assigned prospects.
  • Communicates and advocates the needs and impact of OHS to prospective and existing donors.
  • Develops collegial and productive relationships with colleagues in Development and across the organization.
  • Works independently to meet performance goals and stays on task within the context of the big picture goal.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualification & Transferable Skills

  • The ability to authentically represent the mission, vision, and values of OHS and a passion for animals.
  • Seven to ten years' experience in a multi-faceted funder service environment related to philanthropy advisory and/or fundraising (e.g., donor-advised vehicles, foundations, major gifts, planned gifts, capital campaigns), including counsel on financial matters around which funders and donors also have a lot of passion.
  • Knowledge of the current philanthropy and High Net Worth Individual landscape and insight into future trends and how charities are catering to this landscape.
  • Knowledge of different forms of philanthropic motivations, giving mechanisms and fundraising strategies, particularly from a younger philanthropic audience
  • Expertise in relationship management, stewardship, and cultivation, and/or service-related experience with a particular focus on providing services to high-net-worth individuals.
  • Experience of securing significant partnerships of at least 6 figures from individuals or family foundations and managing relationships with major supporters
  • Demonstrated experience strategizing, formulating, and closing major gifts, and in reaching annual fundraising and performance goals and targets.
  • Experience in making successful qualification calls, experience with moves management and managing a portfolio, as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of leadership and donors to develop and deepen relationships between them and OHS.
  • Demonstrated ability to present the strategic direction and the importance of the institution to the community.
  • Working knowledge of the Portland philanthropic community preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and collaboration skills to communicate with technical, internal, and external audiences, leveraging various communication channels.
  • Ability to work with Board of Directors, OHS senior staff, and other high-level volunteers.
  • Excellent customer service skills, including ability to work with donors in emotionally sensitive gift situations.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Able to maintain a valid Driver's License and provide proof of auto insurance.
SUCCESS FACTORS
Success in this role will be directly linked to the Manager, Philanthropy (Major Gifts) ability to listen closely to what donors want to accomplish with their philanthropy. In addition, the person in this role will need to exhibit professional resilience and be committed to pleasant persistence as they qualify new prospects and deepen engagement with long-time donors. This individual needs to be empathetic, detail-oriented, flexible, patient, and fearless when working with donors. They are metrics oriented and committed to meeting and exceeding financial and contact goals.
Work Environment Conditions & Physical Requirements
This position interacts and collaborates will all levels of the organization, including OHS staff, executive team members, donors, general-public, external vendors, volunteers, and supporters. Contact and communication is carried out through face-to-face, telephone and digital interactions. Excellent customer service skills are essential to success. Communication must be clear, understandable, professional, and respectful in all circumstances.
Working Conditions
  • Work is performed at home or in an office and medical center/animal shelter environment.
  • Travel between the two campuses may be required.
  • Working at both campuses may be required.
  • Occasional weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Animal contact and related injuries may occur.
  • Noise exposure varies and sometimes includes uncontrolled barking and other animal vocalizations.
  • The pace of work is active and demanding, requiring a high degree of multitasking and ability to adapt to changing priorities while managing concurrent projects/tasks to completion.
  • Contact with angry or emotional people may occur.
