Job Summary The Department of Wood Science and Engineering (WSE) invites applications for one or more fixed-term, non-tenure-track full/part-time Instructors to teach on a term by term basis for the 2023-2024 academic year. Some of these appointments may be reviewed for renewal or transition to an instructor position on an annual basis at the discretion of the Department Head. The Department of Wood Science and Engineering fulfills the land-grant education, research, and outreach mission of Oregon State University (OSU) with a focus on science, technology, engineering, design, and business related to wood products and innovation for sustainability.
The primary purpose of this position is to foster critical thinking, advance students' knowledge, and skills through the teaching of Wood Science and Engineering courses. The incumbent is expected to provide an intellectual foundation for students concerning traditional wood working, shop safety, digital fabrication across multiple machines and software packages, and wood shop maintenance.

Key Responsibilities 100% - Delivery and development of curriculum for undergraduate courses in Wood Science and Engineering that are designed to challenge students on topics relating to traditional woodworking, sanding and finishing, shop safety, and digital fabrication (CNC, 3D printing, laser engravers, shaper tools, etc.), and the applicable software packages to run such machines. This may include distance education course offerings based on departmental needs but in-person teaching is required.
What You Will Need - Master's degree in any field.
- A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
- 2 years of lead work, training, or teaching at any level.
- 2 or more years of experience in at least two of the following areas: traditional woodworking, CNCs, autoCAD, 3D printing, furniture making, cabinetry, woodturning, wood sculpture, or related fields.
- Familiarity with all fundamental shop machines, including planer, jointer, chop saw, table saw; at least two programming languages for digital fabrication; familiarity with CNC routers, small scale printers like ShopBots, and laser engravers; familiarity with at least three joinery methods (pocket hole, domino, dovetail, etc.).
- A positive attitude toward the woodworking field.
What We Would Like You to Have - Previous experience in a commercial shop setting OR previous experience owning or managing a woodworking business OR previous experience as an independent wood artist/sculptor.
- Historically and currently a member of at least one woodworking/woodturning professional organization and/or professional guild membership in a related field.
- A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
- Demonstrated ability to blend digital fabrication with traditional woodworking methods in the creation of furniture and other wood products.
- History of shop-based education to underserved populations.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule Work schedule will be based on the class and/or lab times.
