Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Polar STEAM Student Assistant position for the Polar STEAM program at Oregon State University (OSU).
Polar STEAM (https://polarsteam.info) is looking for either an undergraduate or graduate student interested in education, science, or polar environments to provide participant application support and administrative assistance.
Polar STEAM is seeking interested candidates now for employment to begin in Fall 2024. If the position is not filled with this vacancy notice, it will be re-advertised prior to fall term. This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (10-20 hours per week) student assistant position, with the possibility to continue this role in winter term.
Position Duties
The student assistant will report to the Program Manager, and will work directly with Polar STEAM staff on various projects. The student will support both administration and participant recruiting. Duties may include routine to moderately complex clerical or research tasks such as:
50% Administrative Support – Posting recruitment materials to targeted organizations
  • Maintain contacts database
  • Proof-reading and copy editing
  • Communications though social media, websites, or directly with project participants
  • Scheduling and assisting with meeting and event organization
  • Campus errands and basic office tasks as assigned
50% Participant Recruitment and Cohort Support
  • Support initial screening and evaluation of applicants
  • Photo file management with cohort participants
  • Data collection, entry, cleaning (may include use of video editing software)
  • Basic analysis and data summaries
  • Other tasks as necessary
The student will be responsible for planning weekly work within the priorities established by supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
  • International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Interest in polar environments and science.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office programs on PC (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.).
  • Ability to multi-task in a high energy environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Experience with or demonstrable ability to conduct independent and accurate data entry.
  • Attention to detail.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Experience with application software (InfoReady, Submittable, etc.).
  • Experience posting to social media on behalf of an organization.
  • Experience using photo and video editing software.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
10-20 hours per week, flexible according to student availability and program needs. Occasional evenings (approx. once per term) for event coordination. Opportunities for more hours or extending into fall and winter terms may be available. Pay range: $15-$18/hour.
