Oregon State University is Hiring a Radiation Protection Technologist 1 Near Corvallis, OR

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Radiation Protection Technologist 1 position for the Radiation Center at Oregon State University (OSU).

The purpose of the position is to assist in the implementation of the health physics program for the Radiation Center. The Radiation Protection Technologist 1 ensures radiation protection program compliance by the following: monitoring the safety of the health physics laboratory, maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment, reviewing and recommending changes to procedures, ensuring adequate laboratory and radiation protection supplies for routine and emergency requirements, scheduling and performing laboratory analyses, preparing technical reports and radioactive material shipments. The Radiation Protection Technologist 1 is on the Radiation Center’s radiological emergency call list and may be required to respond to emergencies and supervise cleanup of spills or provide radiation protection coverage for accident situations.

Responsibilities

50% Program Compliance

Performs or assists in the following duties:

  • Environmental soil, water, and vegetation samples.
  • Solid, liquid and gaseous effluents.
  • Tritium urinalysis bioassay.
  • Environmental thermoluminescent dosimetry.
  • Reactor radiological samples.
  • Radioactive material inventory and leak tests.
  • Irradiations using the cobalt-60 and beta irradiators

Conduct or assist in surveys or collect samples without cross contamination using the following instruments and specialized equipment to determine contamination levels or potential health hazards.

  • Gas flow proportional counter.
  • High purity germanium detector.
  • Geiger-Meuller or Ion Chamber survey instruments
  • Inspect work-sites with radiation producing materials to determine compliance with federal and state laws.
  • Controls contamination spread, assists in cleanup, and responds to radiological emergencies and accidents and conducts follow up inspections.
  • Assist in the orientation of laboratory class students and Radiation Center residents.
  • Assist with the implementation and operation of radiation safety programs.
  • Informs the Senior Health Physicist of all noncompliance situations and prepares technical reports/correspondence for review by the Senior Health Physicist.

30% Material Handling

Perform or assist in the following duties:

  • Collect, package, label, and ship radioactive materials in accordance with federal and state regulations.
  • Receive, inspect for compliance, and deliver radioactive material shipments.
  • Calibrate or ensure the working order of radiological instruments including dosimeters and TRIGA reactor instrumentation.
  • Controls contamination spread, assists in cleanup, and responds to radiological emergencies and accidents.

20% Dosimetry Program

Perform, assist in, or coordinate the following duties:

  • Distribute and collect dosimetric devices.
  • Inspect to assure compliance with regulations that pertain to use of and exposure to radioactive materials.
  • Ensure program standards are being met maintain an active avenue of oral and/or written communication with the Senior Health Physicist regarding radiological conditions, trends, or abnormal situations and notify the Senior Health Physicist of any abnormalities and assists in the investigation of abnormal results.
  • Maintain records of dosimetry program, conduct an inventory of all dosimetric devices, and maintain an avenue of communication with the dosimetry vendor.

What you need to have

Two years of experience in radiation safety or in testing and repairing electronic equipment; OR An Associate’s degree with courses in Electronics or Radiation Safety Management; OR A Bachelors degree with courses in Electronics or Radiation Safety.

Additional Required Qualifications

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What we would like you to have

  • 1 year experience working with gas flow proportional counters and high purity germanium detectors and in controlling radiation contamination spread and cleanup.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • M-F, 8am – 5pm
  • This position involves working with radiation, radioactive material and laboratory chemicals on a daily basis.
  • A valid driver license and a satisfactory driving record is required for the quarterly environmental radiation level survey.
  • Some moving of lead shielding bricks (up to 50 pounds) and shipping containers is occasionally required.
