Position Summary This recruitment will be used to fill three part-time (a maximum of 5 hours per week) Shop at the Dock Guide for the Oregon Sea Grant at Oregon State University (OSU).
This position will be responsible for delivering fisheries educational programs to the public in the form of dock walks and Shop at the Dock. These programs educate the public on where their seafood comes from, how our local fisheries are managed, and how to purchase high quality seafood. This position provides additional capacity to Oregon Sea Grant, Lincoln County, to deliver these programs during peak tourist season.
Position Duties This position will provide approximately 2-5 hours of direct programming per week.
Duties include:
- Set-up and take-down of Shop at the Dock tent and educational materials (10%)
- Serving as a tour leader/educator for 1-2 tours per week (Fridays, unless opportunity exists for additional tours and tour leader is interested/available) (70%)
- Contacting fishermen prior to Shop at the Dock to determine product availability (5%)
- Updating relevant Daily Catch sheets (5%)
- Reviewing Participation Evaluations (10%)

- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the
Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications Additional Required Qualifications:
- Ability to give walking tours in rain or shine
- Public speaking
- Knowledge of Oregon fisheries and/or willingness and ability to learn prior to July 19
Preferred (Special) Qualifications Working Conditions / Work Schedule - The tours will run on Friday mornings July 19, 26; Aug 2, 9, 16
- We do 3-4 tours, running concurrently, each Friday, with start times of 9:30, 10, 10:30, and 11am (as needed)
- The tours run 60-90 minutes, take place at Port Dock 5 in Newport, and focus on Oregon fisheries, fishing vessels, management, buying seafood, fisheries research, etc.
- The supervisor will work with the students prior to the tours taking place to provide sample tours, offer suggestions about facts/trivia, provide additional information, etc., but some background knowledge of fisheries is necessary
- Average hours per week is 4.5 (8:30am-1pm), although guides don't need to stay the entire time if they have another commitment (e.g., they could just show up for the 10:30am tour without helping with set up, or leave after the 9:30 tour without worrying about take down), as long as prior approval has been provided
