Orion Engineers & Constructors is Hiring a Lead Civil Designer Near Baton Rouge, LA

ORION Engineering & Constructors, a multi-discipline engineering and construction management firm with office locations in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana, is currently seeking a Lead Designer to become a valuable part of our successful Civil Structural Engineering Services team in Baton Rouge, LA.

Essential Functions: 

  • Lead a design team on small or medium sized projects, and some large projects to create innovative and functional designs for our clients.
  • Works under the general direction of the project lead engineer or the Orion project manager
  • Provides direction / leadership / oversight of a team of 1 or more project design staff
  • Interface with the department manager and / or project lead engineer on staff assignments (including staff quantity and required capabilities)
  • Provide instruction / mentoring / training to design staff assigned to the project
  • Provide performance feedback to the department manager and / or project lead engineer on staff assigned to the project
  • Follow Orion project procedures and drawing / document procedures
  • Design, development, and implementation of complex civil/structural design items
  • Within their assigned department / discipline, use industry standard design techniques and calculations required to develop the design
  • Monitor project budget and schedule goals
  • Able to identify project scope changes and communicate impact to project lead engineer / design lead
  • Develop schedule activities for design activities / deliverables
  • Interpret verbal or written direction to initiate a preliminary design.
  • Assemble construction design packages and issue them per Orion procedures
  • Interface with the Orion project manager and/or project lead engineer, and client during project execution
  • Verify accuracy of drawings prepared by others
  • Develop manhour estimates for design functions / deliverables
  • Able to perform all the required draftsman tasks
  • Perform field work as required to obtain accurate information and create sketches for the design of the project.
  • Utilize 2D or 3D CAD software to create layouts and fabrication/assembly drawings of civil/structural systems.
  • Track and maintain awareness of overall project schedules and budgets.
  • Comply with all company and client health, safety, security, and environmental standards and regulations.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Computer Aided Drafting / Design Certification (CADD) and/or relevant work experience; AutoCAD or other CAD software
  • CADWORX 3D software and NAVISWORKS viewer experience
  • Knowledge of design principles and best practices to ensure quality and consistency
  • Ability and availability to work occasional overtime to include weekends as dictated by project requirement
  • Ability to travel as dictated by project requirement
  • Strong organizational management abilities, skills and attention to detail.
  • Teamwork, flexibility, integrity, and a high degree of professionalism are required.
  • Proficiency in MS Microsoft (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, etc.)
  • Must have valid driver’s license and suitable driving record that is able to meet company driver requirements and to obtain a TWIC card if required.
  • Ability to read and understand policies, procedures, and processes.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Commitment to high quality
  • Must be able to pass an approved background check.
  • Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test.
  • Must participate in random drug tests.
  • Associate’s, Technical Degree, or equivalent combination of education; professional training; or work experience required.
  • Minimum of 7 years relevant work experience in Civil/Structural Engineering Design or related functional area (or equivalent working knowledge/experience) required.
