Ottawa County is Hiring an Internship - Department of Strategic Impact Near Olive, MI

The Department of Strategic Impact, in partnership with the Ottawa County Housing Commission, is spearheading a MicroHomes project to encourage the development of starter homes in the County. With a small footprint of around 400-900 square feet, the goal is that these MicroHomes will fill the gap in housing typologies missing from the market in Ottawa County, as well as other parts of the state. Just like traditional, larger homes, these small homes will be thoughtfully designed and built with quality materials.

To assist with this important project, the Department of Strategic Impact is seeking a detail-oriented student interested in pursuing a career in architecture or a related field. The primary focus of the internship is to assist with the development of a set of replicable design plans for the MicroHomes project. The ideal candidate will be able to exhibit strong architectural design and technical skills.

The target start date is August 2024, with approximately 16 hours of work per week for a total of 24 weeks.
  1. Work with a design mentor to develop various high-quality design concepts and architectural drawings for homes between 400-900 square feet.
  2. Develop technical solutions through all phases of the project.
  3. Produce conceptual renderings for project design and presentation.
  4. Possess the desire and ability to learn, advance and grow in a teamwork environment.
  5. Create and maintain documentation that includes designs and necessary reports for all phases of the project.
  6. Design for scalability.
  7. Other duties as assigned.
High school diploma and a minimum of six completed credit hours of general education at an accredited college or university.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
  1. Computer literacy, including working knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets; experience with software packages such as Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD Architecture and Revit, and Trimble Sketchup is preferred.
  2. Proficiency in oral and written communications skills.
  3. Proficiency in interpersonal and human relations skills.
  4. Knowledge of architectural principles and practices.
  5. Knowledge of building materials and construction methods.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances and devices to increase mobility.

 Working Conditions:
Work is generally performed in a normal office environment with the potential for remote work as approved.
Ottawa County is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
