Ottawa County is Hiring a Park Operations Technician Near Olive, MI

Under the supervision of a Parks Supervisor, performs work in the areas of carpentry and woodworking; electrical and plumbing; building repairs and improvements; grounds repairs and improvements; vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs; and equipment operation. Leads work crews involving seasonal employees, volunteers, and other workers.
Reporting to the East Region Park Supervisor, this position works out of the East Parks Operations Center in the Hager Park in Jenison, MI and primarily maintains and improves the Parks and Open Spaces in the Eastern areas of Ottawa County. The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Performs a variety of carpentry and woodworking tasks such as building framing, making shelves, making signs, building bridges and boardwalks. 
  2. Tests electrical circuits, repairs/replaces switches, lights, and other fixtures, installs basic building and outdoor wiring and fixtures, replaces breakers, and performs other related electrical tasks. 
  3. Makes a wide variety of plumbing repairs to irrigation systems, and in restrooms and other buildings and facilities. Installs basic plumbing water and waste lines and fixtures. Performs other related plumbing tasks. 
  4. Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Troubleshoots issues and makes basic repairs. 
  5. Performs a wide variety of grounds work including concrete flat work and masonry; tree removal and trimming; specialized mowing; pesticide application; play equipment repairs; road and walk repairs; grading, filling, and excavating; repairs to park amenities such as stairs, bridges and boardwalks; turf work; controlled burns; and other related tasks. 
  6. Operates various pieces of equipment including mowers, tractors, excavators, graders, and snow mobiles. Loads, unloads, and safely transports equipment. 
  7. Performs a wide variety of building repairs and improvements including structural repairs, masonry, drywall, painting, work on roofing, siding, windows and doors, flooring drains, HVAC and more. 
  8. Provides input and orders parts and supplies needed for assigned projects, repairs, and on-going maintenance. 
  9. May lead a work crew involving seasonal employees, volunteers or others. 
  10. Performs other functions as assigned. 
Required Knowledge and Skills: 
  1. Working knowledge of the maintenance construction trades, including painting, carpentry, electrical and electronic repair, plumbing, etc. 
  2. Working knowledge of landscape and grounds maintenance. 
  3. Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and practices. 
  4. Working knowledge of the proper use of manual and power tools commonly used in the maintenance construction trades. 
  5. Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA occupational health and safety rules, regulations and requirements, and thorough working knowledge of safety protocols and practices. 
  6. Basic computer literacy including virtual meetings using Zoom or Teams, email, web and word processing. 
 
Required Education, Training and Experience
High School Diploma or GED combined with three (3) years’ experience in maintenance and repair of building operating systems and building and grounds maintenance. Proven skills, training and experience in carpentry, woodworking, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, building and grounds repair, equipment operation. Must possess a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements

  1. Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to visually align components of structural features, equipment, operating systems, etc.; accurately read gauges and take measurements; and identify damage to or deterioration of facility features, fixtures, furnishings, operating systems, and components thereof. 
  2. Must have sufficient visual color discrimination to properly match color-coded pairs of electrical wires. 
  3. Must have sufficient auditory ability, with or without audiological devices, to hear alarms, other warning signals and vehicle signals indicating backward or forward motion. 
  4. Must be able to descend to and ascend from floor and ground level several times per day to repair features and fixtures mounted at or near ground/floor level. 
  5. Must be able to work with arms extended above shoulder level for the entire length of shift to repair or replace features, fixtures, systems, and/or components thereof mounted at or above shoulder height. 
  6. Must be able to ascend/descend ladders to access features, fixtures, systems, and/or components thereof located in ceilings or on rooftops. 
  7. Must be able to operate and ride in lift devices to access rooftops and exterior lighting systems. 
  8. Must have sufficient manual strength and dexterity to use small hand and power tools. 
  9. Must be able to lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 80 lbs. with or without mechanical or other assistance. 
  10. Must have sufficient strength and mobility in wrists, elbows, and shoulders to operate power tools commonly used in construction trades. 
  11. Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures; dirt, dust, pollen, and other airborne particulates; and inclement weather conditions. 
  12. Must be able to tolerate exposure to custodial and other chemicals, solvents, adhesives, caulks and other compounds and chemicals commonly used in facilities maintenance. 
  13. Must be able to enter and maneuver in confined spaces to access mechanical rooms and operating systems. 
  14. Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment. 
Working Conditions:
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical and electrical hazards; noxious fumes; dust, dirt, and other airborne particulates; extremes of temperature and humidity; solvents; detergents; noise; and other hazards, and with possible exposure to a variety of disease agents and to bloodborne pathogens.
