Ottawa County is Hiring a Program Lead: Recreation and Wellness (Part-time, Non-benefited) Near MI 49460, MI

Under the general supervision of the Coordinator of Community Engagement, plans and conducts current and new recreation-based programs throughout the county parks system. They also work with current and new partners to provide more community members with recreation and wellness opportunities. While this position is responsible for the facilitation of recreation and wellness programming year-round, schedules can be flexible.
This position is part-time, non benefitted. The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: 
  1. Plans, coordinates, conducts, promotes, and evaluates a wide variety of recreation and wellness programs and opportunities in Ottawa County including but not limited to kayaking, mountain biking, hiking/walking, and other special events.
  2. Determines program content, scope, and budget; sets goals and evaluates effectiveness. 
  3. Schedules, coordinates, and ensures the preparation and setup of facilities/parks for events; works with various county departments and outside vendors to set up and facilitate programs and events.
  4. Identifies need or public interest in new programming; submits recommendations for new products as programming needs are expanded.
  5. Arranges for the purchase of supplies, coordinating expenditures with County Policies. Assists with the procurement, distribution, care, use, and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Maintains supply and equipment inventories. 
  6. Assists in the preparation of and makes recommendations regarding budgets; monitors expenditures and allocates funds. 
  7. Assists in search for grant funding opportunities. 
  8. Develops promotional materials to advertise recreational programs, activities, and special events.
  9. Develops and maintains a working relationship with a wide variety of community members and organizations.
  10. Conducts outreach to all segments of the community to identify and support the creation of innovative programs and provide opportunities to involve and integrate the residents of the community.
  11. Explores partnerships to expand recreation offerings in the community, e.g. other local and groups who work with at-risk or disadvantaged members of our community.
  12. Composes correspondence, staff reports, keeps records, and makes presentations as needed.
  13. Assists with recruiting, interviewing, and evaluating temporary program staff or contractors as needed. 
  14. Ensures the safety of program participants, co-workers, and the general public by following county policies. If necessary, provides first aid. Reports all incident/accidents to the Supervisor immediately. Completes and submits appropriate accident/incident records and forms.
  15. Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
Required Education, Training and Experience:
High school diploma or GED. Experience working with children and adults in an outdoor setting (nature center, camp, school, etc.). Experience with program planning, development and presentation preferred. Ability to communication in Spanish or other language spoken by groups residing in the county is strongly preferred.Required Knowledge and Skills: 
  1. Helps support an equitable, safe, diverse, and inclusive workplace.
  2. Excellent verbal communication skills required. Ability to speak effectively to a variety of groups. 
  3. Good written communication skills required. 
  4. Fundraising or grant writing experience preferred.
  5. Basic principles and practices of group dynamics and group interactions
  6. Basic principles and practices of leadership and group organization.
  7. Ability to prepare and present budget and to monitor expenditures.
  8. Ability to assess and provide suitable programs based upon the needs of the participants.
  9. Water safety, CPR/AED, Wilderness First Responder training preferred.
  10. Capable/proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  11. Ability to interact positively and professionally with other Parks and Recreation staff, children, and the general public from a wide range of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and with widely diverse communication skills.
Physical Requirements: 
  1. Must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. Must possess sufficient mobility with or without assistive devices to access and lead groups through all natural features, structures, and facilities in parks. The features include dune stairs. and other areas that are somewhat strenuous.
  3. Must have sufficient vocal ability to deliver verbal presentations to park patrons and various groups.
  4. Ability to lead groups year-round in a variety of weather conditions.
  5. Ability to travel to various sites throughout the County.
Working Conditions: 
Work is generally divided between a normal office environment and the outdoor environments of the County parks. There is frequent exposure to inclement weather and airborne particulates. Must have ability to hike up to five miles over uneven terrain, with or without assistive devices. Must be willing and able to work weekend and evening shifts in order to accommodate scheduled park programs.
