OUR UNIVERSITYOttawa University (established in 1865), one of the oldest private liberal arts universities in the United States, is a multi-campus system serving approximately 4000 students through its campuses in Kansas (Ottawa, Kansas- Residential Campus and Overland Park, Kansas- Adult Programs); Arizona (Surprise Residential Campus and OUAZ Adult Programs); Wisconsin (Brookfield Adult Programs); and our OU ONLINE PROGRAM based out of Overland Park, Kansas. Ottawa University is a regionally accredited, church-related, private university that strives to integrate faith, learning, and life in the academic experiences of students. Job SummaryPosition will work part-time in any of the following areas: Custodial, Maintenance, Grounds, and Safety & Security. Duties may include: thoroughly cleaning assigned areas/buildings; perform general maintenance with building as a member of a team as assigned; perform security of Campus as assigned; and insure all equipment is handled properly and is always secured. Assisting with special events is additional required as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (provide list of items which are essential to effective outcomes in this role):
  • Custodial: requires cleaning, of the following, but is not limited to: carpet and tile, walls, windows, doors, furniture, restrooms, offices, porches and sidewalks. Cleaning includes regular maintenance cleanings, spot or stain removal, and detail cleaning of specific areas for special events.
  • Performs work for University special events requiring event “set ups” and “tear downs”.
  • Must work cooperatively with others within and outside of the department to provide a complete and efficient service.
  • Must have a positive work attendance, work in a variety of environments and climatic conditions, have flexibility to work evenings and weekend hours, and the willingness to work overtime as necessary.
  • Safety & Security: Must be observant for suspicious/irregular or threatening activities across facilities. Must be available to provide assistance and security in escorting students and employees to appropriate destinations. Must be highly visible and available at all times for student and employee safety needs.
  • Requires regular inspection tours, on foot, of assigned buildings which requires the employee to walk long distances, climb stairs, and may subject the employee to extreme weather conditions. Inspections include checking doors, windows, and gates. Must monitor people in buildings requiring authorization for being there and requiring those not authorized to leave. Maintain an awareness of route information such as building hours, fire and intrusion alarm status, and on-going maintenance problems. Stay knowledgeable of state fire codes, university safety guidelines, and policies governing university buildings.
  • Safeguards the university against hazards, safety problems, and property damage. Insure appropriate illumination of buildings to include exits and stairwell lights. Inspect buildings with an eye toward utility conservation. Takes prompt action to eliminate immediate danger to life or property.
  • Responds, usually on foot, immediately to emergency situations. Assist in building evacuations, when needed. Assist in perimeter control, when necessary, which may involve exposure to extreme weather conditions. Reports life threatening conditions and/or property loss/damage to proper authorities. Provide assistance in accordance with training and common sense and/or stands by until help arrives.
  • Must work cooperatively with others providing a courteous, complete and efficient service. Must maintain proper care and control of department equipment and vehicles. Participate in and/or provide training as required. Must have a positive work attendance, work in a variety of environments and climatic conditions, have flexibility to work evenings and weekend hours, and the willingness to work overtime as necessary. Represent the University in a positive and responsive manner.
  • Maintenance: Performs general maintenance to buildings. Perform duties as assigned. Performs other maintenance necessary to insure continued operations.
  • Carry out assigned repair/maintenance requests by inspecting, evaluating, seeking assistance from Supervisor as needed to determine materials, tools, and equipment are needed to complete the project. Appropriate completion of paperwork is essential.
