Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science from an accredited institution.
Written and verbal communication skills are required.
Primary Responsibilities
Follow the Reference Laboratory's Standard Operating Procedures for all approved activities performed within the Reference Laboratory.
Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies and document all quality control activities, equipment and procedural calibrations, and maintenance performed.
Perform all required equipment maintenance on the Immucor NEO Echo and QIACube Connect as outlined in the departmental SOPs.
Identify problems with equipment and reagents that may affect test performance and immediately notify reference laboratory management staff.
Troubleshoot issues with equipment, reagents, and controls
Remove equipment from service and/or document corrective actions taken when equipment and/or reagents operate outside of the reference laboratory's performance specifications.
Locate samples which require testing and prepare them as needed for testing on approved procedures.
Communicate all accessioning, sample processing, testing, equipment, and reagent issues to the Reference Laboratory Lead Tech or management staff.
Prepare reagents and samples for testing per the NEO ECHO and QIACube Connect SOPs.
Load samples, reagents, and QC material for ABO/Rh type, antibody detection and identification, donor red cell antigen screening on the NEO ECHO.
Program the NEO ECHO with the appropriate testing information. Recognize and troubleshoot any error messages that appear.
Recognize when QC has been previously performed on the NEO ECHO and understand when QC must be repeated per departmental SOPs and when QC is a pass.
Recognize when runs are completed and unload the instrument per departmental SOPs.
Recognize when testing must be repeated or additional testing is needed, consult with Reference Laboratory technologists as needed.
Print completed run reports from the NEO ECHO and hand off to Reference Laboratory technologists for review and result reporting.
Prepare reagents, DNA extraction tubes, samples, and worksheets for DNA extraction process done on the QIACube Connect, or manually, if the instrument is down.
Load reagents and the DNA extraction samples on the QIACube Connect and run the extraction process per departmental SOPs.
Review run logs and extracted samples to ensure there were no failures with the DNA extraction.
Recognize run failures and when the DNA extraction process must be repeated.
Know storage requirements of DNA samples, DNA reagents, and samples used for testing.
Recognize when donor red cell units need Hemoglobin S testing completed prior to distribution of units.
Know how to use the automated donor sample tube storage system to locate donor testing tubes needed for additional testing.
Prepare reagents, samples, and worksheets for SickleDex testing per departmental SOPs.
Perform SickleDex testing on appropriate samples per departmental SOPs.
Understand concurrent documentation of test results on worksheet. Worksheets and samples are handed off to a Reference Laboratory technologist for review and resulting.
Inspect reagents and supplies that are received in the reference laboratory
Label reagents and supplies with date received and status
Store reagents and supplies in the appropriate location
Perform additional duties as needed
Complete RARE donor tags with the appropriate donor and testing information
