Job Summary and Qualifications

The Sterile Core Technician (SCT) has the responsibility of coordination and oversight of daily activities between the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and the OR to facilitate case flow. Under the supervision of the OR and SPD Leadership, the SCT will be responsible for stocking and coordinating the flow of surgical case carts, equipment, and surgical instrumentation. The SCT requires advanced knowledge of surgical instruments and supplies, their uses, and appropriate substitutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as a liaison between the Surgery departments, SPD, Materials Management, and Clinical Engineering departments as necessary to assure patient safe instruments, supplies, and equipment is available as needed to support surgeries.
  • Responsible for assisting in projects, process improvement and quality initiatives.
  • Promotes customer service/satisfaction through training, education and resolution of issues.
  • Cleans, packages, and processes surgical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Manages multiple computer applications to assist with sterilization tracking and processes.
  • Responsible to operate and troubleshoot power equipment to process instruments (i.e.
  • autoclaves, washer disinfector, ultrasonic cleaners).
  • This position will meet the operational needs of the surgery patient by organizing, receiving and properly storing and delivering surgical instruments and equipment to the OR suites quickly and accurately.
  • Assures surgeons' needs as identified on the surgical preference card are complete and accurately assembled in advance of the scheduled procedure and expedites as necessary for add-on and emergent procedures.
  • Maintains an inventory within the surgical cores instruments and tracks utilization within the appropriate inventory/instrument control systems as developed and directed by Perioperative Leadership team.
  • Completes the assembly of surgical case cart and assure the cart is completely stocked and delivered to the appropriate suite in advance of the case.
  • Ensures OR room turnover occurs directly following the procedure according to the perioperative policy/procedure guidelines.
  • Maintains cleanliness and physical appearance of the unit.
  • Provides additional instruments, sutures, equipment, and supplies (not included in the preference card) to the OR as needed during surgical procedures as requested.
  • Reports and removes malfunctioning equipment, tags immediately, and communicates with the charge nurse and perioperative operations manager.
  • Performs basic maintenance tasks such as changing compressed gas cylinders and related tasks.
What qualifications you will need:
  • High School graduate or GED.
  • IAHCSMN Certification as a Central Processing Technician (CRCST) within 18 months of hire.
  • KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES/LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION Preferred Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician with at least two (2) years instrument processing or related experience, with demonstrated proficiency in recognizing various types of specialty instruments One or more years of experience as a Sterile Core Technician.
  • Prefer knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Must be able to adapt to unpredictable situations within the perioperative setting.
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner.
  • Must utilize proper safety techniques and body mechanics in all work-related activities.
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills to gather information from individuals, build relationships that support collaborative work within the department and across the organization and provide exceptional service to patients.
  • Ability to problem-solve routine situations and requests assistance from identified resources when more direction is needed.
  • Each employee is trained and is expected to observe all fire and safety procedures and blood borne pathogen and hazard communication standards.

Overland Park Regional Medical Center is a 340 bed facility offering acute medical services to our patients. We are Johnson County’s only Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and Level II Trauma Center. We have an Accredited Stroke and Chest Pain Center. Our hospital is a premier area destination for Women's & Children’s healthcare services. We offer the region’s only Maternal Fetal Health Center to care for critically ill mothers and their babies. Our hospital has an antepartum unit, a labor and delivery unit, and a Level III NICU.
