Job Posting for Floor Supervisor/Lead Bookseller

Pay range $23-$26/hour

Bookselling in a supervisor position is a busy, active job that requires attention to leadership, the ability to invigorate and problem-solve, engagement with the public, grace under pressure, patience, and a positive attitude. Our primary goal is exceptional customer service, while contributing to a smooth operation in a clean, supportive, and friendly work environment. You’ll interact with customers, help locate titles, and maintain order on the floor to contribute to a pleasant browsing atmosphere and workplace. This role includes facilitating bulk orders for business to business, outlined below, as well as a Children’s Literature component, which is encouraged but not mandatory.

Responsibilities of Floor Supervisor:

  • Oversee day-to-day floor operations including regular cleaning, web orders and special orders, deliveries, tech and building issues, troubleshooting Bookmanager issues, troubleshooting and assisting in the podcast studio
  • Managing vendor/service relations and owning general floor maintenance projects
  • Maintaining awareness of event and podcast studio schedule, maintaining clean and efficient work spaces, order and organize all supplies
  • Set daily agendas for staff and create weekly and monthly staff schedules and ensure proper shift coverage. 
  • Act as point of contact and support for staff issues and queries and relay to the General Manager as needed. Act as point of contact for staff call-outs. 
  • Coordinate staff camaraderie and team-building activities.
  • Train incoming booksellers on different functions, mandatory employee protocols, and assist with periodic performance reviews. 

Responsibilities of a Lead Bookseller: 

  • Customer service: 
  • Welcome customers as they enter the bookstore and ask them how they can be assisted. 
  • Provide information on book availability using our inventory management software and other web-based databases. 
  • Assist customers in locating books in the store, or place special orders if necessary.
  • Give suggestions of books according to customers’ interests.
  • Answer the phone, and address customer inquiries and questions, or direct them to the appropriate person.
  • Maintain knowledge of upcoming events and share with customers when appropriate. 
  • Sales and Order Processing: 
  • Process transactions through Bookmanager, our point of sale system. 
  • Clearly communicate the store's policies (returns, holds, shipping) to customers.
  • Pick and ring web orders for in-store pickup and shipping.
  • Contact customers when their order is ready for pick up, and maintain customer hold shelf. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Business to Business Logistics
  • Oversee operations for business to business and bulk orders.
  • Coordinate with Buyer to facilitate orders, account for inventory, reorder for damages.
  • Spearhead order fulfillments, process orders within the inventory system, and execute finalization of all sales.
  • Handle all communication with clients.
  • Identify and manage support staff to complete these tasks as needed.
  • Liaisons with necessary stakeholders to ensure payments are received in a timely manner. 
  • Coordinate with the General Manager to organize, report, and account for invoices, payments.
  • Identify high priority clients and assess relationships which may be improved.
  • Operations Contributions
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, orderly physical space: straighten shelves and displays, clean up after any self- staff- or customer-created clutter. Consolidate or remove trash and recycling.
  • Pull and sort returns to publishers. 
  • Shelve incoming, misplaced, and backstock books according to class codes in Bookmanager.
  • Assist in the setting up, hosting, and breaking down of in-store or off-site events
  • Assorted data entry and other tasks as they come up. 
  • Creative Contributions
  • Generate ideas for book displays, or subsections of shelves. 
  • Regularly provide staff picks for display in-store and online. 
  • Work with the General Manager to best merchandise the children's section, with a focus on maximizing discoverability and legibility for customers across the many age ranges and types of books and sidelines in the children’s section. 
  • Maintain knowledge about the children’s book catalog and recommend books by age, reading level, and interest. 

Qualifications for the role

  • An interest in books and a non-judgmental attitude about what people like to read. 
  • Positive attitude and ability to maintain a friendly disposition in a busy retail environment. 
  • Ability to learn and navigate new software and sleuth books on search engines. 
  • A commitment to supporting your coworkers and contributing to a positive workplace. 
  • Well-organized, able to multitask, but also attentive to detail. 
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Previous bookselling experience is required. 
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.
