Job SummaryWorks within the vision, mission and philosophy of the agency. Supervises the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) nursing staff on a 24/7 basis overseeing the delivery of crisis assessments, stabilization, disposition planning and physical health needs of youth admitted to the CSU. This classification requires the CSU Nurse Manager to have relevant education, training and demonstrated current competences in the psychiatric and nursing care of youth in need of care on a Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU)
Responsibilities And DutiesManagement
  • Analyzes utilization of staff and distribution of workloads with respect to organization, fiscal management, regulations, acuity and social / political / professional trends in nursing practice within area of responsibility.
  • Assesses the numbers and levels of personnel needed to provide for a specific population on the CSU.
  • Assesses and identifies the educational needs of staff as well as the quality of nursing care delivered, as they relate to nursing care standards.
  • Assesses and tests the competencies of nursing personnel assigned to the CSU.
  • Identifies situations requiring corrective action and then organizes, analyzes and presents the appropriate documentation for correction.
  • Establishes priorities and coordinates activities needed to implement youth care on the CSU; including staffing patterns that provide for quality care; addressing the acuity needs and meets minimal requirements for staff to youth ratios as defined by regulations;
  • Collaborates with CSU, Crisis Transition Team(CTS) and Mobile Crisis program management and staff to facilitate a seamless continuum of care and to assure the integration and adherence to standards for clinical management and performance;
  • Participates in strategic planning to establish goals and objectives to facilitate state of the art delivery of quality crisis services for youth; including the identification of staff development needs;
  • Participates in the process of identification, supervision and implementation of departmental goals;
  • Collaborates in the formation of key performance indicators / outcome measures for the continuum of Crisis Services;
  • Uses systemic methods to resolve youth care and nursing issues; initiates planned change, evaluates outcomes, implements corrective action through consistent and collaborative efforts;
  • Meets with medical staff regularly to share information and problem solve;
  • Participates in the HR personnel actions for nursing staff assigned to CSU
  • In collaboration with the Training Department, implements and evaluates curriculum needs and the development and implementation of nursing competencies;
  • Assists in the orientation and training of new or less experienced staff as necessary;
  • Collaborates with appropriate personnel in performing new procedures and/or in functioning in unfamiliar situations;
  • Maintains a safe and supportive environment;
  • Assumes a leadership role in emergency situations, monitors the work of nursing and other unit staff and directs the care of youth present in a single unit;
  • Reviews CSU policies and procedures to enhance administrative effectiveness, ensure compliance with care standards and regulatory mandates and support goal attainment of the program;
  • Directs and implements utilization of nursing care evaluations tools;
  • Evaluates outcomes of emergency situations and provides support for staff and youth involved;
  • Participate in CQI planning and review activities;
  • Other related responsibilities, including various quality assurance functions, as assigned, or other duties to support specific department/business needs.
Nursing Clinical Skills
  • Applies a triage method for assessing treatment priorities.
  • Provides Physical Health Assessments to youth entering CSU; demonstrates all nursing competencies established in CSU Policies and Procedures
  • Expertise in triage assessment and interface with referring providers and individuals (eg. police, mental health providers, acute care hospital ED, family)
  • Analyzes and validates data taken from interview of the youth and/or family for common relationships, revises assessments based on youth’s behaviors and psychiatric presentation.
  • Assesses youth care needs and utilizes this knowledge to formulate appropriate crisis and nursing interventions into youth stabilization and safety plans;
  • Plans strategies for youth care needs;
  • Collaborates with appropriate support personnel in the discharge planning of youth and in the appropriate referral to other behavioral health resources in the community;
  • Assists in developing plans for teaching youth and families about the multiple requirements of proper home care. (eg: safety planning, medications, follow-up care, mental health resources, etc.);
  • Provides professional nursing care to youth experiencing a psychiatric crisis and assists in the administration of psychiatric and medical care;
  • Explains stabilization procedures to youth and provides support before, during, and after stabilization;
  • Assists youth in developing reactive, proactive safety plans
  • Administers psychiatric medications with a thorough understanding of their indications, contraindications, side effects, and adverse reactions;
  • Teaches the youth and family how to follow psychiatric recommendations and orders after discharge (eg: safety planning, medication reactions, dietary changes, etc.);
  • Teaches family to recognize signs/symptoms of decompensation and appropriate interventions in the event that this occurs after the youth discharged is from CSU;
  • Performs mental status examinations and crisis intervention techniques and makes recommendations for further services as necessary;
  • Acts as a liaison between youth and physician;
  • Applies life skills coaching techniques to encourage socially acceptable behavior;
  • Physically restrains combative patients following accepted standards of practice (TCI trained);
  • Reviews incident reports to identify and correct occurrences;
  • Evaluates interventions made by less experienced staff and makes modifications where necessary;
  • Observes, assesses, records, and reports the youth’s behavior, condition, and reaction before, during, and after stabilization;

Minimum Education And/Or Experience
  • 2-3 years Nursing experience, 1 of which is in a mental health setting.
  • At least 1 year of nursing leadership expierence.
Other Specific RequirementsPossession of a valid license as a Resistered Nurse issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
