Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is Hiring an Energy/Environment/Economy Scientist 1 Near College Park, MD

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) at PNNL is seeking one or more Energy/Environment/Economy Scientists to conduct research on the integrated modeling and analysis of long-term energy-water-land-economy-climate system transitions and interactions, potentially focusing on the following areas: modeling and analysis of the role of trade and regional teleconnections in long-term energy and agricultural systems, minerals and materials and their role in long-term transitions; and technology characterization and representation of carbon dioxide removal, hydrogen, other emerging technologies in a long-term, integrated model (GCAM). The primary assignment location is at JGCRI in College Park, Maryland. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will contribute to multiple projects including technical analysis, research using JGCRI’s flagship Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM), and project leadership.

The anticipated tasks will include a subset of the following:

  • Contributing to research, modeling and analysis including producing technical reports and contributing to papers in peer-reviewed journals, presenting at scientific and technical conferences, and presenting to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Modeling and analysis related to decarbonization strategies and other future energy system configurations at global to regional to national and subnational scales using GCAM and regional and subnational versions of GCAM;
  • Contributing strategically and/or technically toward development of new analytical and modeling capabilities particularly centered around GCAM and associated tools;
  • Closely collaborating with interdisciplinary scientists at PNNL, University of Maryland, other collaborating research institutions, sponsoring agencies, and other decision makers (e.g., US DOE, US DOS, US EPA, DoD, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA or higher

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD, MS or MA Degree in Engineering, Economics, Public Policy, Physical Science, or related field. Candidates with more experience will also be considered.
  • Experience with integrated assessment modeling, multisector modeling, energy systems, or energy-economic modeling.
  • Record of publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience leading specific project tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of multi-disciplinary science teams.
