Palace Entertainment is Hiring a Sea Life Park Curator Near Waimānalo, HI

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all aspects of the animal care department including, but not limited to: supervision of the Animal Care personnel, animal welfare, animal training and enrichment, exhibit maintenance, collection planning, regulatory compliance and permitting, conservation messaging, departmental budgeting and the creation an excellent guest experience.
  • Works collaboratively and maintains a strong relationship with the Veterinary Staff, Assistant Curators and Animal Care Supervisors. This group develops, implements and maintains departmental procedures to maintain a high quality of animal care and to monitor all aspects animal care including, but not limited to, animal health, animal enrichment, animal diets, exhibit maintenance, behavioral training, and recordkeeping.
  • Collaborates with Staff Veterinarian, Assistant Curators, and Animal Care Supervisors, to develop and implement husbandry behavioral plans for all resident species.
  • Works with the Veterinarian and Animal Care staff to recognize animal health concerns, develop and implement the response plan and is responsible for ensuring all treatments are carried out as prescribed. Assists with planning and execution of veterinary procedures as needed.
  • Works with Staff Veterinarian, Assistant Curators, and Animal Care Supervisors, to develop and maintain diet and nutrition plans for all resident animals. Responsible for placing animal food orders on a regular basis and organizing their transport to the island, as well as to Sea Life Park.
  • Supervise and manage park wide animal food handling practices, including food preparation, storage, feeding, and procurement. Ensure compliance with all USDA/APHIS and AMMPA regulations in regards to animal food. Responsible for training of all staff members involved in any stage of animal food handling.
  • Works with the Veterinarian to develop a long-term collection plan for breeding and animal acquisition. Responsible for organizing all aspects of animal acquisitions including permitting, transportation, quarantine and introduction to the collection. Responsible for organizing and completing all animal transports within Sea Life Park property.
  • Responsible for maintaining all transport equipment within park, as well as development of new, required equipment for safe transport of all animal residents and to maintaining compliance with new regulations.
  • Assists with the concept development and design of new animal exhibits within the park and manages exhibit construction, improvements and maintenance.
  • Creates and maintains a team of dedicated animal care professionals by providing strong leadership and direction to the Animal Care team with a strong focus on staff development and training on current best practices of animal care, human and animal safety and regulatory compliance. Collaborates with Assistant Curators and Animal Care Supervisors to create and teach staff current professional methodologies for animal behavior modification.
  • Facilitates open communications between the interdepartmental management team, Aquatics managers/supervisors and the Veterinary staff on all animal care, personnel and departmental matters. Works with SLP management team to develop and promote company goals.
  • Together with the Assistant Curators, Animal Care Supervisors and Veterinarian, the Curator is responsible for oversight of the creation, implementation and operation of our animal presentations, educational lectures and tours, and interactive programs. Works with the Education Manager to develop the educational message delivered to our guests through the numerous vehicles both within the park and through our outreach programs.
  • In collaboration with the SLP Research Committee, reviews and promotes research projects proposed by internal and external sources.
  • Maintains all regulatory permits relating to the Animal Care department.
  • Ensure compliance with USDA/APHIS standards for all regulated species in residence at Sea Life Park. Complete all on-site inspections with USDA/APHIS officers.
  • Ensure compliance with all AMMPA standards and guidelines. Responsible for creation of all required documents, protocols, and records required for compliance.
  • In conjunction with Assistant Curator of Marine Mammals, ensure compliance with all IMATA training standards and guidelines for animal trainer development and implemented behavioral conditioning protocols.
  • Responsible for supply ordering for entire Animal Care department for all animal care related tasking. Also responsible for disseminating these supplies appropriately and evaluating supplies used for all animal care purposes.
  • Manage overall animal care budget for entire animal program at Sea Life Park Hawaii.
  • Responsible for developing priority lists of all projects requiring additional funding outside of regular operating budget (CapEx projects) on annual basis and responsible for assuring projects are funded.
  • Working with Veterinary Staff, develops and implements pest remediation protocols in all animal areas.
