Summary:

The EHS Specialist II is responsible for leading and implementing EHS programs and guidelines in support of PENA’s battery production. Additionally, this EHS Specialist II serves as the environmental champion, managing implemented Environmental programs and policies. The EHS Specialist II plays a key role in production operations as well as the management of PENA’s EHS programs and policies. The Specialist II will work directly with PENA leaders, stakeholders, consultants, and vendors to maintain compliance and mitigate risk by implementing best practices within PENA’s integrated management system.

Essential Duties:

  • Promote a culture of quality, safety, compliance and continuous improvement throughout the PENA organization.
  • Serve as a technical consultant/subject matter expert for EHS programs and policies.
  • Independently answer questions, concerns, and compliance issues from internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental laws, regulations, and standards.
  • Develop and implement written environmental, health & safety programs, policies and procedures.
  • Assess and evaluate processes and activities on the production floor and guide production teams in adoption of best environmental management practices.
  • Coach and influence members on a wide range of EHS processes and procedures, driving a high-performance culture of safety, quality and sustainability.
  • Work collaboratively with Production and support teams to implement and support ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 programs.
  • Lead/support equipment risk assessments, process hazard analyses, and change management processes.
  • Evaluate equipment design and suggest modifications and safety improvements.
  • Conduct and manage industrial hygiene surveys as needed and conduct job hazard assessments to identify and control physical, chemical, and biological hazards in the workplace.
  • Lead incident analyses to determine root cause(s), prevention, and corrective measures.
  • Collect and analyze data using commercial or in-house platforms. Effectively communicate information to verify compliance and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Assist with emergency response activities and drills.
  • Conduct routine audits to identify deficiencies and develop appropriate corrective actions.
  • Prepare and submit timely and accurate reports and permitting requirements as needed.
  • Interact and support personnel at all levels, both internal and external to the company.
  • Work effectively and efficiently in both team-based and independent working environments to add value to the organization.
  • Perform any other tasks that may be assigned by EHS leaders.

Qualifications: Requirements - Required and/or Preferred:

  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years of EHS experience.
  • 3 - 5 years of experience working in manufacturing environment with a focus on environmental compliance activities.
  • Highly competent in Environmental regulations. Working knowledge of the Clean Air Act, Toxic Substance Control Act, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures regulations.
  • Highly competent in OSHA standards and other guidelines such as NFPA, ANSI, NEC, ACGIH, NIOSH.
  • Experience in developing environmental training; working with the training manager to ensure training is effective and engaging.
  • Experience in creating and presenting EHS training.
  • Experience conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and root cause analysis.
  • Experience working with contractors and external personnel regarding field-based safety.
  • Self-starter, with general instructions. Strong attention to detail.
  • Work effectively and efficiently in a cross-discipline environment as well as independently.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work in an extremely fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Results orientated with the ability to plan and deliver against production deadlines and goals.
  • Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Skills in MS Office (Word, Power Point, Excel, Outlook).
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Preferred: Graduate Degree in EHS, Engineering or related technical field.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Resilient, self-motived and able to work well under pressure.
    • Alignment to Panasonic’s seven (7) core principles (contribution to society, fairness and honesty, cooperation and team spirit, untiring effort for improvement, courtesy and humility, adaptability, gratitude).
  • Preferred Certification(s):
    • Current DOT HazMat Shipper’s Training
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or
    • Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
    • ISO 14001 or 45001 Lead Auditor
    • Current RCRA training
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:
  • To ensure the health and safety in the workplace and for the protection of our employees, wearing PPE is a possibility and may include equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, bump cap, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator.
