Pantex Plant is Hiring a Chief Mechanical Engineer Near Amarillo, TX

What You'll Do

As the Mechanical Chief Engineer, you will provide leadership, guidance, and technical direction to mechanical discipline engineers and designers. Technical scope will include a variety of mechanical related issues relative to non-reactor nuclear facilities, nuclear explosive facilities, explosive facilities, mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic, or heat transfer systems and projects or modifications at the Pantex site. Experience and knowledge in the area of HVAC design is essential. You will be responsible for advising senior plant leadership, customers, engineering groups, or others of critical engineering and facility issues. You must effectively use your technical background, judgement, creativity, and innovation to develop unique technical solutions for issues with wide scope and complexity. You will assist in developing program and project requirements to ensure compliance with governmental, consensus code, or procedural requirements. Your duties also include developing, leading, and implementing improvements to departmental technical processes and procedures.

The Mechanical Chief Engineer performs work at a senior level requiring advanced understanding and application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the engineering field. Requires a working knowledge of other related disciplines and how those disciplines interface with existing systems. Must be able to effectively represent Pantex in discussing complex issues with National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB). An emphasis on safe and secure plant operations is paramount. The Mechanical Chief Engineer will oversee the pressure safety program and the American Society of Mechanical Engineer’s Owner’s Inspector Program.

Candidates must possess multi-disciplinary knowledge of engineering, systems, calculations, applications of engineering, construction methods and materials, engineering application of computer software, and technical requirements definition. Candidates must also be knowledgeable of mechanical industry and regulatory standards as well as criteria pertinent to design engineering for United States Department of Energy (USDOE) and National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). Candidates must have working knowledge and experience with ASME Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) including commercial grade dedication as well as experience with DOE Orders and Standards relating to mechanical design, quality assurance, and engineering design. Candidates must have working knowledge and experience with ASME B31 and ASME Section VIII codes and API standards.

The Mechanical Chief Engineer will ensure procedural compliance with an ability to effectively coordinate engineering issues with senior management, customers, construction organizations, engineering groups, project teams, parent company technical specialists, or other groups. The Mechanical Chief Engineer will perform technical reviews with comments on design documents and specifications for construction. The Mechanical Chief Engineer will also prepare (or direct the preparation of) project studies and reports. Proficient oral and written communication skills with the ability to conduct presentations to senior level executives, governmental customers, engineering groups, or other groups is a requirement. Candidate must have excellent time management, mentoring, listening, and critical thinking skills.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (BSME) with 20-years (minimum) experience in mechanical design with at least 6 of those years working in the nuclear industry. Included in this the BSME applicant shall have 7-years (minimum) experience in engineering management or oversight.
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering (MSME) with 18-years (minimum) experience in mechanical design with at least 6 of those years working in the nuclear industry. Additionally, the MSME applicant shall have 7-years (minimum) experience in engineering management or oversight.
  • Doctorate degree in mechanical engineering (PhD) with 12-years (minimum) experience in mechanical design with at least 6-years (minimum) experience in mechanical design working in the nuclear industry. Additionally, the PhD applicant shall have 7-years (minimum) experience in engineering management or oversight.

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Excellent communications and interpersonal skills required. The selected candidate must be comfortable working in a high visibility environment requiring high levels of autonomy, flexibility, and responsiveness to customer needs. The candidate must have a proven track record of successful customer and executive leadership interaction.
  • In addition to satisfying one of the above education and experience criteria, the candidate must be licensed as a professional engineer (or the ability to obtain licensure) in the state of Texas.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required, candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
