Under general supervision, the position provides tailored retention and student success services for LGBTQIA students and leads the day-to-day activities of the LGBTQIA Center through strategic initiatives focused on academic success, well-being, inclusion, celebration, and graduation of LGBTQIA students.

The LGBTQIA Center primarily serves the needs of LGBTQIA students under the Division of Equity, Diversity & Justice. The position assists the supervising manager by supporting services for LGBTQIA students through case management towards graduation / transfer, organizing services, developing workshops, trainings, and events, and coordinating centralized assessment of student success initiatives geared towards closing equity gaps and addressing campus climate.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES :

  • Supports student outreach, recruitment, career, retention, completion, and transfer efforts, in collaboration with other campus partners, with a special focus on LGBTQIA students. (E)
  • Connects linkages to LGBTQIA students to appropriate programs and services both on campus and off-campus to best assist them with issues affecting their retention, success, basic needs, safety, and wellbeing. (E)
  • Monitors equity-focused LGBTQIA student involvement in on-campus support resources, including academic counseling, development of student educational plans, support services related to financial aid, scholarships, internships, transfer, including completion of transfer admission guarantees, and other campus services. (E)
  • Collaborate with retention specialists and success coaches to coordinate and align LGBTQIA student success and retention efforts with District-wide retention efforts.
  • Collaborates with academic and career counselors, success coaches, instructional / non-instructional faculty, staff, instructional aids, tutors, and managers to identify potential barriers to LGBTQIA student persistence and develops culturally responsive strategies to address these barriers. (E)
  • Monitors responses and supports for LGBTQIA -identified students Early Alerts submitted by faculty and staff through the establishment of goals centered in equity to promote success. (E)
  • Coordinates day-to-day operations of the LGBTQIA Center, including front-desk coverage, event calendar management and scheduling. (E)
  • Develops events and services for the LGBTQIA Center to support the educational experience of LGBTQIA students in collaboration with staff and faculty, including overseeing logistics and scheduling. (E)
  • Prepares and provides educational workshops and trainings for students, staff, and faculty, on topics related to LGBTQIA inclusion, LGBTQIA student experience, strengths of LGBTQIA students, best practices for supporting LGBTQIA student success, and services available for students through the Center.
  • Utilizes data to develop and assess tailored LGBTQIA student retention, academic success, basic needs, and services and programs through the LGBTQIA Center.
  • Provide short-term crisis intervention, long term advocacy and case management to assist LGBTQIA students, including but not limited to specialized support to LGBTQIA domestic violence survivors.
  • Help identify and track progress on student -directed and student -driven goals that support self -sufficiency.
  • Collaborates with campus-based mental health professionals to coordinate workshops and outreach that support the well-being needs of LGBTQIA students wellbeing and persistence.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with community-based organizations, including but not limited to services providers specializing in interpersonal and sexual violence, housing insecurity, and LGBTQIA specialized support.
  • Develops reports to assist the supervising manager with assessing the programs, services, and retention efforts of the LGBTQIA Center, including program review.
  • Identifies goals of the LGBTQIA Center and resources necessary to assist the supervising manager to meet the changing needs of LGBTQIA students.
  • Monitors the center budget to assist the supervising manager in budget administration, including requisitions, documentation, and databases.
  • Collaborates with District staff to identify, hire and supervise hourly staff.
  • Develops work schedules for student workers and staff of the center.
  • Leads, mentors, and evaluates performance for student interns / workers and volunteers from a strengths-based perspective, related to their program or projects, particularly those focused on LGBTQIA student programs and services.
  • Conducts LGBTQIA Center orientations to provide information of services.
  • Conducts trainings for student workers and hourly staff to familiarize staff with the operations of the LGBTQIA Center.
  • Assist in the development of culturally appropriate marketing and publicity materials such as flyers, emails, newsletters, posters, presentations, brochures, videos, websites, and social media platforms.
  • Updates the LGBTQIA Center website to provide students with relevant information.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE :

Minimum Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in education, counseling, psychology, sociology, or closely related field
  • Two (2) years of experience working with the LGBTQIA community or diversity affairs, and
  • Two (2) years of experience working in academic advising, retention, education, student services, non-profit, community organizing, mental health or related field.

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Four (4) years of experience working in the field of student services and success, education, non-profit, community organizing, mental health, or related field.
  • Experience selecting, training, and leading hourly staff

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills and abilities commonly associated with this position.

KNOWLEDGE OF :

  • Knowledge and understanding of LGBTQIA student experience in higher education, as well as knowledge of broader diversity in higher education and the ability to address these issues through co-curricular programs and activities.
  • Knowledge of student retention strategies and services for LGBTQIA students
  • Knowledge and understanding specifically of emerging challenges, trends, and concerns among specific populations within the LGBTQIA community, in particular the trans community
  • Experience with crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and responding to emergent needs
  • Commitment to social change including working to end domestic and sexual violence and all forms of oppression : racism, heterosexism, trans oppression, ableism, sexism, classism, etc.
  • Strong understanding of and ability to communicate the dynamics of intimate partner violence and sexual violence in LGBTQ relationships.
  • Ability to promote, organize and facilitate group meetings.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize multiple work priorities and organize various projects and to follow safety and confidentiality protocols.
  • Experience in creating, implementing, facilitating, and publicizing events for both student and employee stakeholders
  • Excellent cultural competency skills to engage with individuals from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated experience working with communities who have been traditionally underserved by higher education and experience in the pedagogy reflecting intersections of race, culture, class, ethnic, and queer communities.
  • Demonstrated experience with college students in program leadership and professional development.
  • Demonstrated skills in web marketing, design, and social media interactions.
  • Demonstrated experience in the following areas : recruitment, retention, or academic advising at the university level.
  • Excellent initiative, organization, attention to detail, resourcefulness and problem-solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills (e.g. the ability to exercise tact, diplomacy, sensitivity in interacting with students, staff, & faculty and handling sensitive issues).
  • Ability to learn policies and procedures from both verbal and written sources; ability to apply and explain office policies and procedures with consistency.
  • Knowledge and experience using standard office computer applications such as Google Email and Calendars, Word, Excel, database software.
  • Ability to prepare various documents including operations manuals and procedures, program and activity schedules, proposals, and monitor budgets.

SKILL TO :

Use general office software and equipment to develop training materials, develop work schedules, garner services for the LGBTQIA Center, generate reports, aggregate data, communicate with District staff and students.

ABILITY TO :

  • Effectively promote and facilitate workshops, events, and services of the LGBTQIA Center.
  • Effectively address and resolve conflict.
  • Effectively assist the supervising manager in assessing the semester and annual goals for the LGBTQIA Center.
  • Effectively assist the supervising manager in the hiring and training of student workers and hourly staff.
  • Ensure effective customer service and follow up with student referrals.
  • Communicate with students, instructors, and staff in a timely manner.
  • Communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
  • Maintain and develop effective relationships with District staff, students, and external agencies.
  • Ability to produce detailed reports and documents, analyze data, present findings, and suggest resolutions.
