Job Description

The position of Mosquito Tech I involves responsible tasks in the operation of mosquito control spraying equipment, adult and larval mosquito inspections and field-level control applications decisions.

Employee is responsible for identifying a mosquito problem, and with supervision, effecting the control strategy.

Employee performs a variety of field duties, occasionally involving complex procedures. Usually, employee is expected to work independently with minimal supervision and is required to exercise initiative, tact and good judgment in carrying out those duties. Technical assistance is always available from the supervisor relative to unusual matters.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions of the position and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties. These descriptions are descriptive and not restrictive; incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here.

  • Inspects locations for larval mosquito production, identifies the problem and applies an approved control measure.
  • Collects biological samples for laboratory analysis and/or records data relative to the inspected habitat. Enters information into computerized data loggers.
  • Will be required to walk through marshes, swamps, and remote heavily vegetated areas alone.
  • Operates vehicular equipment such as light duty trucks with spraying apparatus which requires the manipulation of simple controls and/or the manipulation of handheld (carried) spray systems. Employee is responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the equipment to which he is assigned.
  • May be required to operate light duty off-road equipment in the performance of certain spraying assignments.
  • May be required to operate mosquito control ground adulticiding equipment either in addition to regular duties or in lieu of such duties during periods of heavy mosquito infestation.
  • Applies pesticides of various formulations for the control of pestiferous insects and noxious weeds.
  • Assist in the implementation of source reduction efforts.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The intent of the listed knowledge, skills and abilities is to give a general indication of the core requirements for all positions in the Biological Technician series; therefore, the KSA's listed are not exhaustive or necessarily inclusive of the requirements of every position in the class.

  • Able to make simple biological decision in the field in the course of assigned duties.
  • Not intimidated by working in areas know to harbor large reptiles.
  • Able to collect and properly handle biological samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Able to operate spraying equipment, while maintaining proper application dosages.
  • Physically capable of pulling spray hoses through rough terrain for extended periods of time and capable of carrying backpack application equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform skilled tasks without close supervision.
  • Able to meet the public. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Able to work with pesticides in accordance with the label.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations and of the precautions to be taken to avoid accidents.
  • Physical strength and agility to work outside, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and carry out written and verbal instructions in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Able to identify common mosquito larvae found in Pasco County and their associated habitats by the end of the first year in the field.
  • Knowledge and understanding of all mosquito control products used and the application rates allowable by the product label and District policy as well as understanding of appropriate product selection based on mosquito species and habitat required by the end of the first year in the field.
  • Able to find surveillance and treatment locations without using GPS or MapVision within assigned zones to demonstrate familiarity with sites by the end of your first year in the field.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

  • Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a G.E.D certificate. Must demonstrate the ability to do computerized record keeping.
  • Must have at least 6 months or more of experience in pest control industry.
  • Must obtain a current Public Health Pest Control License issued by the State of Florida DACS, within six months upon initial hire.
  • Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must be able and willing to work at times outside the regular scheduled workweek to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be legally allowed to work in the United States
  • Must complete DODD adult and larva I.D. courses

COMPENSATION

1. This is an hourly position. Employees are eligible for overtime work (over 40 hours per week) and may select overtime pay or time-compensation at 1.5 hourly adjustment.

2. Employees of this class shall receive medical benefits and are eligible for enrollment in the Florida Retirement System.

Physical Requirements: Moderate-to-strenuous physical activity is required on a regular basis including lifting, carrying up to fifty pounds, reaching and pulling with arms, stooping, squatting, walking, kneeling, bending, standing, climbing in and out of various equipment and vehicles and climbing up and down ladders. Must be able to use hands and fingers to type, grip and operate a variety of hand tools and other equipment.
Excellent vision, both close and distance, is frequently required.

Work Environment: The work environment varies but normally is outdoors but may also include saltmarshes, wetlands, workshops, warehouses, office buildings, airplane hangars, laboratories, forklifts, off base locations, heliports, and vehicles. Regular exposure to all types of weather, including high temperatures and humidity, sun, rain, wind, mud, and insects is required as the position regularly works outside. Occasional local travel is required. Noise level is usually low but occasional exposure to moderate noise levels when around helicopters, tanker trucks and a variety of motors, equipment, and engines. Working with and around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used and disposed of according to exact labeling instructions, is required occasionally. Working with or around fuel, fumes, paint, and dirt is frequently required.
Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts is required.
