POSITION:  Program Assistant & Safety Patrol

LOCATION: Patrick Lynch Elementary School

HOURS: 6.5 Hours Per Day (8:30am - 3:30pm)

DAYS: 190 Days Per Year

STARTING SALARY: Range 1 ($16.40 - $17.27 Per Hour for 2023-2024; 2024-2025 Hourly Rate Pending Union Negotiations)

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT(S): The position of Program Assistant monitors student behavior during playground, cafeteria, detention-time out, or street crossing activities; and performs a variety of general clerical duties in support of instructional activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • As a playground or cafeteria assistant:
    • Monitor student activity, safety, and behavior.
    • Enforce District policies and rules.
    • Resolve minor or routine behavioral problems and discipline students for minor rules infractions.
    • Report more serious behavioral problems to appropriate teacher or to a Principal.
  • As a detention-time out room assistant:
    • Supervise student sent to the detention-time out room for specific periods of time,
    • Administer discipline for minor infractions of behavior standards;
    • Maintain comprehensive records of students serving detention or time out,
    • Prepare letters sent to students' parents,
    • Confer with school administrators regarding completed and in-complete detention and time-out assignments.
  • As a crossing guard:
    • Maintain order and discipline among students at curbside; safely stop traffic at appropriate times and escort students in safely crossing street;
    • Report significant student behavior problems and unsafe traffic situations to appropriate staff.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform basic first-aid, makes initial assessment of medical emergencies, and summons appropriate medical response.
  • Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS – QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience Preferred: Some experience working with students, preferred not required.
  • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Skill in working with other adults and with students with a variety of skill levels, monitoring student activities and behavior and constructively intervening to stop unsafe or unruly behavior. Monitor student educational progress and advise teacher(s) of student progress or perceived deficiencies. Patiently and effectively work with students, including students with behavioral problems and mild learning disabilities. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Knowledge of Basic child care techniques; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and basic bookkeeping, as required of specific assignment, and modern office methods, practices, procedures, office equipment, as required of specific assignment. Learn basic first aid and safety requirements.

Ability to learn and apply techniques and methods of student supervision and classroom management, learn growth and development principles of students. Work in a team situation. Apply prescribed instructional program in small and large group settings and in one-on-one tutoring setting. Type at a speed necessary for successful job performance. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. To learn and apply basic principles and practices of instructional program within area of assignment. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with others. Ability to develop rapport with students and other employees. Ability to make decisions independently.

Ability to speak a second language preferred. 

  • Education Required: High school diploma or equivalent. Some experience in child supervision desirable. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a first-aid and CPR card.
  • Licenses, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance (applicant agrees to assume cost upon offer of employment).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel. Reports to appropriate Principal.
