Paynesville Area Schools is seeking a K-12 Social Worker with a focus on Secondary students.
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing School Social Work services to the District.ASSIGNMENT: Full time as outlined by the Certified Master Agreement.The Paynesville Area Schools Social Worker is responsible for compliance with the following professional competencies.
  • Performs in a manner consistent with high professional and ethical standards. (For example, protects privileged information, advocates for children with disabilities, etc.)
  • Demonstrates effective participation in educational planning.
  • Demonstrates positive relationships with parents, children, colleagues, and administration through listening and openness.
  • Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrates punctuality, reliability, and timely follow-up on assigned tasks and other issues of concern.
  • Demonstrates initiative and resourcefulness.
  • Seeks appropriate clarification of supervisor’s/building administrator’s expectations.
  • Demonstrates preparedness at team meetings by presenting useful data that contributes to the well being of children.
  • Demonstrates good judgment and problem solving via tact, diplomacy, responsiveness and appropriate actions.

% of MAJOR AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY: 60% Provide direct services to students
  • Meet individually or in small groups with students based on needs in the areas of: social skills, various mental health issues, family issues, educational needs, conflict resolution, anger management, bully/harassment issues, self esteem, etc.
  • Develop intervention strategies to assist students
15% Provide direct services to school personnel
  • Help teachers in classroom management skills
  • Provide school personnel with essential information to better understand how diverse factors can affect students' performance and behavior.
  • Provide direct support to staff
  • Classroom presentations as requested by staff
  • Assist with identifying and reporting child abuse
10% Provide direct services to parents and families
  • Interview family to determine needs of student
  • Assist in accessing outside resources
  • Offer parenting direction, education, and support based on needs of family
  • Perform liaison role between family and school
5% Provide crisis intervention services
  • Intervene with individuals, groups, staff, and families as necessary for a variety of traumatic events
  • Collaborate with crisis team members and outside resources during crisis
  • Provide follow-up as necessary
5% Network/Collaborate with Community Resources
  • Referrals to community resources such as medical, mental health, social service agencies, etc.
  • Coordinate on-site services provided by outside resources
  • Work with education team regarding outside placements
  • Attend staffings regarding students at community agencies
  • Committee, task force, etc. membership
  • Advocate for new and improved services for children
  • Consult with colleagues inside and outside school district
5% Provide additional services as needed
  • Assessments and screening services for students
  • Child Study team membership

  • Assist with truancy and attendance issues
  • Assist with 504 issues

NATURE AND SCOPE OF POSITION (relationships, knowledge, skills and abilities, and problem solving creativity)RelationshipsThe employee possesses and practices interpersonal relationship building skills which are central to social work practice and the helping process, and that enhance the harmonious operation of the Paynesville Area School District. All employees are expected to be aware of and follow the policies of the Paynesville Area School District. This position interacts and collaborates with numerous interdisciplinary professionals on a regular ongoing basis.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • The employee possesses a thorough knowledge base of social work methods and state and federal laws.
  • The employee must possess a particular knowledge and understanding of family systems, family therapy, the helping process, individual counseling, group work, and the services available through the schools and other community resources.
  • The employee will possess the basic foundation and knowledge in the study of biology, psychology, sociology, political science, and economics, as well as knowledge of social welfare policies and services. Knowledge of particular theories that help explain the person-problem-situation phenomena in social work.
  • The employee possesses fundamental skills in record keeping, team building, problem solving, data collection, assessment, goal setting, evaluation, problem prioritization, and professional skills, etc. The social worker will operate with flexibility, using a variety of possible skills, depending on the situation.
  • The NASW Code of Ethics in executing a series of activities that reflect values, knowledge, and interpersonal relationship skills guides the employee.
Problem Solving
  • The employee has considerable freedom and independence in developing service plans and implementing various services with individuals and families.
  • The employee will meet as needed with the Director to discuss case problems and progress.
  • The employee is free to act within the confines of the school district policy/procedure, State and Federal law, and accepted social work practice.
  • The social worker works closely with the community and school in inter-disciplinary service delivery and collaboration. The employee also participates in a staffing group with other WCED social workers for review, support and guidance on an as needed basis.
Critical Skills/ExpertisePhysical Involvement:
  • Requires vitality to accomplish numerous tasks and processes.
  • Occasionally requires extended periods of sitting during meetings and desk work.
  • Occasionally requires bending, stooping, or sitting on the floor to perform one on one assistance.
  • May lift equipment or supplies typically not to exceed 25 pounds.
Minimum QualificationsEducation:
  • BA or BS degree required.
  • Certification/licensure required: Holds a baccalaureate or master's degree; and is currently licensed in Minnesota to practice as a social worker under the Board of Social Work.
  • Other desired: Multiple licensure and willingness to accept additional duties such as co-curricular assignments.
Experience
  • Previous social work experience is preferred, but not required for the position.
Special Knowledge Or Skills
  • Ability to constantly make decisions and to act with some freedom but within the district and building policies and procedures / guidelines.
  • Ability to meet the needs of diverse learners, deal with classroom management, paperwork, and implement district, state, and federal mandates.
