Head of Human Resources

Job Summary:

The Head of HR will run the daily functions of the Human Resource (HR) department, which include hiring and interviewing hourly staff, administering pay, benefits, and leave, employee relations, and enforcing company policies and practices. This is a hands-on role with strategic responsibilities.

Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversee the daily workflow of the department, which may include supervision of office staff.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Review, track, and document compliance with mandatory and non-mandatory training, continuing education, and work assessments. This may include safety training, anti-harassment training, and professional certifications.
  • Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
  • Recruits, interviews, and facilitates hiring qualified job applicants for open restaurant positions as needed; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings.
  • Conducts or acquires background checks and employee eligibility verifications.
  • Audit the orientation and onboarding process to ensure compliance and timely completion of required paperwork.
  • Update payroll records by entering any employee information or benefits changes, such as job title changes, exemptions, and deductions.
  • Ensure demographic information is captured in the HRIS system to facilitate the completion of state and federal pay equity reports.
  • Researches and analyzes organizational trends, including reviewing reports and metrics from the organization's human resource information system (HRIS).
  • Performs routine tasks required to administer and execute human resource programs, including but not limited to compensation, benefits, leave, and worker’s compensation claims; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health, wellness, and safety; and training and development.
  • Handles employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and managers, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
  • Lead investigations related to discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.
  • Attend or participate in employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and engagement activities as needed.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations; collaborates with the managing partner on best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
  • Maintains knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law.
  • Manages the preparation of wage and salary payroll, including functions such as computing and making extensions and deductions.
  • Responsible for distributing payrolls and compiling periodic and special payroll reports.
  • Establishes record-keeping and control systems to comply with external legal and regulatory requirements to provide internal safeguards.
  • Make periodic visits to company locations to engage staff, ensure compliance, and conduct investigations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge pf payroll tax laws.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS (Criterion, Paylocity) and back-office systems (CTUIT).

Education and Experience:

  • A bachelor's degree in human resources or a related field and/or equivalent experience are preferred.
  • At least five years of human resource managerial experience is required; the restaurant industry is preferred.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken Spanish required.
  • HR certification highly preferred.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Periodical travel by car 20% of the time.
  • Hybrid - On-site (3 days per week) office environment
