The Salary Range for this position is between $133,000-$162,000 annually, depending on experience.
Reporting to the Manager of Technical Services. The scope of your role will be to effectively managing all aspects of the Coal Preparation Plant, Tipple, Stoker Loadout, Refuse Stockpile, permanent Coal Storage Facilities, and the Train and Truck Steam Loadout Facilities to achieve planned production levels at optimum cost while ensuring that shipped product meets the contract specifications of all coal supply agreements. This role offers a great opportunity for growth and to expand knowledge and skills.
Twentymile mine is an underground coal mine located in Colorado’s scenic Yampa Valley about 20 miles outside Steamboat Springs, a ski resort and vacation destination. The surrounding area has towns both large and small including Oak Creek, Craig, Hayden, and Steamboat Springs. Hunting and fishing are very popular in this area. Shotgun and archery hunting is allowed on Peabody property for employees with proper authorization.
Peabody Twentymile has a safety-first culture and has been recognized two years in a row by the National Mining Association as the safest underground coal mine in the United Sates. The award recognizes coal and mineral mining operations with the lowest MSHA reportable injury rate. In 2023, Twentymile completed three years without a single reportable injury.
Duties will include:
  • Surface Operation Manager shall be responsible for the management, operation, maintenance, planning, safety, MSHA compliance, and environmental compliance of the following:
    • Coal preparation plant, tipple, stoker loadout, refuse stockpile, permanent coal storage facilities, and the train and truck steam load out facilities.
    • The surface facilities associated with the water distribution system and the maintenance and organization of the surface storage yards, roads and parking areas.
  • Responsible for the health and safety of all employees, vendors, contractors, and visitors that perform work or visit the surface areas of the mine site.
  • Quality Control and Plant Yield - The surface operations manager is responsible to ensure the shipped product meets the contract specifications of all coal supply agreements and that prep plant yield vs shipped quality is maximized.
  • Manage maintenance and operation cost to reduce the overall cost structure of the surface facilities.
  • Demonstrate leadership in Peabody Energy’s safety process including the active involvement in the observation and SAWOL process.
  • Ensure that the SAWOL elements and other safety and health standards are being implemented and incorporated into the surface operations.
  • Responsible for the supervision and performance of the surface employees. This shall include monitoring that all Peabody policies are followed including discipline when warranted.
  • Responsible for the operation of the coal preparation facility and mobile equipment to ensure the coal processing and handling equipment operates in a safe, cost-efficient manner.
  • Responsible for the preparation plant to produce a salable product that meets the requirement of the mine’s contracts. This will require that contract specifications are known and communicated to the surface personnel and that adequate testing is being performed to ensure that the quality being produced meets the required specifications.
  • Develop and manage a surface cleaning plan that addresses maintaining cleanliness through all surface facilities and management of root causes of leaks or other issues adversely affecting plant cleanliness.
  • Develop and manage a written documentation checklist that requires plant personnel to make and document daily, weekly, and monthly inspections or tasks to insure efficient operation of the surface.
  • Actively manage personnel crew assignments, make adjustments to the crew list as required, and ensure changes are communicated to stakeholders.
  • Foster a vision of continuous improvement throughout the surface department to improve overall operations.
  • Management of the ROM stockpile to reduce the hazards of spontaneous combustion and track the quality and age of the coal being placed and reclaimed.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of preventative maintenance and quality control programs for the surface facilities and equipment.
  • Maintain effective communication with surface personnel, the transportation coordinator, the onsite independent laboratory staff, governing agencies, and other mine management and staff.
  • Work with the surface maintenance planner to develop short-term (daily, downshift, and weekend) work lists as well as long-term maintenance plans. These lists shall be communicated with all surface employees.
  • Monitor the process and equipment to maximize availability, minimize delay time, maximize planned maintenance, and minimize operating and maintenance costs.
  • The Plant Manager should be aware of individual’s skill level and staff the crews with an equal amount of expertise and skill. The Manager should also provide training and guidance so each crew member can improve their level of skill.
  • The Surface Manager should communicate Surface activity that may have an impact on the mine operation, (stockpiles, freshwater issues, equipment), as well as communicating issues related to the underground mining practice that may have an impact on the surface operations. Such as (non-typical volumes of rock or abrupt losses in yield).
  • The Surface Manager should communicate and work closely with the cross functional departments and assist in areas or tasks that may take place on the surface. Such as hauling pan line or loading / unloading large items with the crane.
  • The Surface Manager shall be responsible and accountable to ensuring all environmental department surface issues, DMG compliance as well as surface maintenance items, drainage, dust control etc. are maintained in a violation free standard.
  • Monitor plant circuits to maximize efficiency, maximize yield and minimize magnetite and chemical use.
  • Monitor plant cyclone pressures to ensure equipment is operating at optimal capacity.
  • Oversee the snow plowing and road and grounds maintenance activities.
  • Remain current on new coal preparation technology and help determine if new technology can be economically justified.
  • Work with the warehouse and supply chain management to maintain a proper inventory of parts for repairs for the facilities and associated equipment. This also includes developing plans for non-stock items to prevent/minimize emergency deliveries.
  • Regularly monitor the preparation performance and maintain the monthly performance KPI’s.
  • The Plant Manager should look ahead and manage the stockpiles for times of high production as well as periods of low or no mine production.
  • The Surface Manager shall plan, schedule, and organize employees, production schedules and maintenance schedules to ensure delays to underground production are minimized. This shall include, but not be limited to, shutdowns due to “stacking out” the ROM stockpile, fresh water, and emulsion water supply to the mine, poor roads, and access, etc.
  • Coordinate required examinations of the 6 Main North escape hoist.
  • Implement the elements of the “Peabody Way” into the operation of the preparation plant and other surface facilities.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

About you:
  • High school diploma required; BS in Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum 4 years as a supervisor in coal handling and preparation required.
  • Minimum 2 years in prior management role in heavy industrial environment with 4 years as supervisor in coal handling and preparation preferred.
Physical requirements:
  • Must have the ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift.
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles.
  • Must have the ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on/off equipment and ladders.
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms/legs and good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must have the ability to lift/raise 80 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the work shift.
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light/dark, in and around artificial light, and in a confined work area.
  • Must have the ability to work various shifts (required shifts include days, evening, and nights, with rotating schedules, weekends, and holidays)
