POSITION SUMMARY:

The mechanic is responsible for maintaining both the light and heavy truck fleet of the Facilities Department of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which plays host to the World's Largest Single-Day Sporting Event, the Indianapolis 500®. This full-time position will expose you to many different projects throughout the facility and offers an unmatched opportunity to be a part of the execution and operations of our events.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • With the Truck & Equipment Supervisor, provide support for all facilities activities.
  • Perform high skilled and complex mechanical repairs such as electrical, hydraulic and computer systems including sensors on both light and heavy equipment such as trucks, loaders, backhoes, tractors, semi-trucks, trailers, street/track sweepers, track drying equipment, and other company owned and leased machinery and vehicles.
  • Inspect and maintain jet track drying equipment as well as providing fuel operations at event time including pace car fuel, generators, light towers, and track support vehicles.
  • Maintain fuel tank compliance by checking and maintaining fuel pumps and in ground tanks on the property per IDEM requirements.
  • Design and fabricate miscellaneous parts and fixtures, performing paint, heating, drilling, bolting, welding (MiG, stick, and Tig.] brazing sandblasting soldering and cutting operations for facility.
  • Maintain adjust and repair hydraulic systems on heavy equipment, street/track sweepers, retail trailers, etc.
  • Keep records on vehicle and equipment repairs.
  • Pick up and deliver vehicles.
  • Perform road service as needed. Plow, sweep, or salt streets, parking lots, and sidewalks as required. Pick up vehicles with a wrecker or crane as needed.
  • Prepare and repair trams and retail trailers as needed.
  • Coordinate parts runs and maintain sufficient parts inventory.
  • Participate in the selection of equipment and in the pre-preparation of specifications for purchase.
  • Design, install, and maintain all safety lights and warning beacons on IMS Track Rescue and Maintenance fleets.
  • Work with IMS Track Operations to perform track drying during private tests and track rentals.
  • Provides support for all events hosted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
  • Other duties as assigned. Due to the unpredictable nature of being a multi-event facility, all employees of the Facilities Department may be required to occasionally help with responsibilities outside of their normal job description.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • No supervisory responsibilities.

Education

  • High school graduate or GED with automotive service and equipment experience, or equivalent experience.

Skills/Experience

  • Practical experience preferred but not required.
  • Effective mechanical aptitude.
  • Requires valid driver's license. May be required to obtain and keep a CDL certification.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Effective working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession.
  • Proficient in understanding and following oral and written direction.
  • Commitment to working with people from diverse backgrounds and commitment to cultural competency.
  • Ability to uphold and consistently demonstrate the Penske Entertainment Standards.

Certifications

  • IDEM Certified. Must be able to study and pass IDEM online Test.
  • Forklift, high-lift, telehandler, skid steer, etc. training available on-site.

Tools

  • Individual should own a set of common hand tools for their own use such as sockets, ratchets, screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers, and automatic

Travel/Work Hours/Flexibility

  • No travel required.
  • General hours are Monday-Friday, 7:15am-4pm, however this will vary greatly during events and based on project workload. Candidates must be flexible through the event season (April through October) and able to work weekends and overtime when needed.
  • Longer hours and weekends required for the Month of May and other major racing events.
  • Penske Entertainment acknowledges that the need for flexibility varies across all companies/departments and is not best addressed by a one size fits all flexible work policy. As such, the company encourages supervisors to work with their employees to leverage flexibility as needed to support a healthy balance.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to move heavy objects over 50 lbs.
  • Ability to enter confined spaces.
  • Employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Constant standing, walking, stooping, kneeling and repeated bending.
  • Constant reaching high/low/level and repetitive twisting or pressure involving wrists or hands.
