PGT Innovations is Hiring a Material Handling Specialist Near Phoenix, AZ

Summary

Planning, sorting and distribution of daily/weekly production paperwork by operations. Is capable of performing all operations within department or work cells at established rates. Operations include but not limited to: Automated - Welders, Corner Cleaners, etc - Manual – Saws, Dies, Assemble, Cleaning, etc

What You'll Do

  • Ability to perform assigned preventative and predictive maintenance. Ensure operator care procedures are being followed. Examples include but not limited to:
    • Check and maintain coolant/lube oil levels and concentrations.
    • Report all machine and equipment maintenance problems to department leaders.
    • Assist with training new and existing team members in learning machining and assembly processes.
  • Inspecting/monitoring/Training to procedures according to production tickets and Product Assembly Documents (PADs)
  • Provides leadership to ensure team members demonstrate appropriate work skills, technical accuracy, efficiency and conformity to company policies.
  • Meets with group leaders to determine daily and weekly work priorities and adjusts work activities accordingly.
  • Prepares team member schedules and coordinates absences or overtime with Team Leader in order to meet work requirements.
  • Serves as department contact person when Team Leader is unavailable.
  • Relays and shares information with team members and other departments in a timely manner.
  • Schedules meetings with staff and attends meetings with other departments to ensure optimum communication.
  • Champion of safety. Monitors each team member's adherence to safe work practices and company's safety policies.
  • Monitors repair and construction to ensure adherence to quality standards. Analyzes work processes to determine ways to reduce cycle times and error rates.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Safety

  • Serves as a role model for safety. Knows and practices specific safety procedures to avoid injury to self and co-worker; Identifies and reports potential safety issues or non-compliance with safety procedures.
  • Responds effectively to injuries, accidents, and emergencies; reports injuries/unsafe conditions immediately. Takes steps to correct the problem.
  • Immediately cleans up coolant and oil spills.
  • Complies with lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures.
  • Uses machines, equipment and hand tools safely and properly; Uses machines only when properly trained.
  • Makes sure protective guards are in place on machines, tools, and equipment when needed.
  • Performs daily housekeeping to keep area safe, free of obstructions, neat and orderly
  • Uses and teaches correct lifting techniques per safety/ergonomic training.
  • Leads stretching exercises and ensures team does them properly.
  • Ensures team members rotate jobs.
  • Leads/supports safety training.
  • Ensures line/department maintains an acceptable safety record based on goals/history. Takes steps to verify that machinery/tools can be used safely. Asks for/make suggestions to improve safety. Implements improvements.

Quality

  • Consistently and accurately reads, interprets and follows information on production tickets to make sure product is built right the first time. Instructs team members to do the same.
  • Knows and trains team members based on quality standards; accurately uses and reinforces work instructions, quality alerts and other quality processes; work instructions are visible and up-to date.
  • Consistently monitors production processes to verify quality standards such as dimensional requirements and product cleanliness are met. Communicates quality issues to team; makes improvements. Encourages and responds to team member suggestions for improvements.
  • Accurately distinguishes between usable and non-usable materials and parts. Reports non-conforming raw materials to Quality Systems. Takes corrective steps when needed. Teaches team members to recognize materials quality issues and to optimize use of good materials.
  • Schedules machine down time to allow for preventative maintenance. Ensures preventative maintenance schedules are followed to ensure product quality.
  • Trains team members to diagnose probable causes in malfunctioning products and how/when to rework to ensure functionality.
  • Ensures line/department maintains an acceptable quality record based on goals/history.
  • Actively participates and complies with the team’s 5S initiatives, is attentive in housekeeping, and offers suggestions to improve 5S program.

Productivity

  • Determines daily priorities and plans/adjusts activities to meet goals. Communicates schedule and productivity goals to team. Reallocates labor per needs. Proactively schedules work, absences, and assignments to ensure future goals can be met
  • Understands and communicates company and department expectations/measures and results including BOOM, errors, non-conformities, quality, safety, and material usage. Properly manages uses of supplies, tools, and materials. Encourages and responds to suggestions for improvement from team.
  • Ensures line/department maintains an acceptable level of productivity and material usage based on goals/history.
  • Understands and teaches team members about the production flow, including the role of glass plant, feeders, manufacturing lines, ship support, transportation, etc.
  • Knows and teaches the correct production process. Ensures team members on line are cross-trained to maximize productivity and enhance performance.
  • Properly operates and maintains machines, tools and equipment (and/or oversees Technical Specialist efforts). Recognizes and reports equipment malfunctions.
  • Uses computer system proficiently to print daily production schedule, get detailed information about specific orders and reprint production tickets. Accurately reads/interprets computerized instructions and menus; runs/interprets AS/400 reports. Uses information to make effective decisions to help productivity.

Teamwork

  • Acts as or identifies buddy for new team members; mentors experienced team members to build skills needed for productivity and job satisfaction. Ensures buddy system is effective in making sure new team members are welcomed, trained and made to feel like a part of the team.
  • Conducts regular, effective team meetings for communication, teambuilding and motivation. Takes steps to build rapport with team, including getting to know team members. Communicates effectively and clearly -- verbally and in writing -- with whole team, including other shifts, lines and leaders.
  • Sets an example for team by approaching people and work positively, supporting leadership and being a champion for change.
  • Gives his or her best effort under all circumstances. Focuses on assigned task both physically and mentally on a consistent basis. Avoids and discourages excessive idle conversations during non-break times.
  • Identifies issues affecting team and helps resolve problems to increase morale and motivation of team members.
  • Attends inter-shift and other meetings in Group Leader’s absence. Participates on cross-functional teams. Periodically attends Production meeting. Shares information with team, across shifts and with other departments.

Who You Are

  • Must know or learn all tasks on line, including set up, and operate automated, semi-automated or manual machines and final steps of manufacturing or feeder lines.
  • Good written and oral communication skills required.
  • Must be able to stand at workstation for at least 8 hours a day
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on an occasional basis
  • Must be able to perform calculations
  • Ability to prioritize is required.
  • Knowledge of PGT products and processes preferred.
  • Consistent daily attendance

Education and/or Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, analytical, conflict resolution, time management, and communication skills required.

Advanced Math Skills

Reasoning Ability:

  • Excellent problem solving, reporting, communication, leadership and managerial skills, along with the ability to work in a team environment.

  • Constant standing up to 12 of hours a day
  • Frequent walking throughout assembly facilities
  • Frequent bending/stooping/squatting
  • Occasional reaching overhead when handling glass
  • Frequent reaching/pushing/pulling away from body
  • Frequent pushing with minimal or maximum force to maneuver the glass down the production line on rollers
  • Frequent carrying up to 60 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting up to 90 lbs. Frequent repetitive hand/foot/head/neck movements required

Other: Temperatures will vary. Dusty and noisy environment when operating machines and tools. Safety shoes, ear and eye protection required always in all plants. Additional PPE may be required depending on location or task.
