Phelps Health is Hiring a Blood Bank Supervisor Near Rolla, MO

General Summary
  • Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director, the Blood Bank Supervisor serves as the technical and clinical supervisor and directs all activities for his/her area of responsibility. The section chief is responsible for all technical procedures, manuals, proficiency testing, and quality control, as well as the training, certification of competency and performance evaluation of all employees working in this area. The summary is not all inclusive.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities 
  • Ensures all procedures, policies, and training performed under area meets requirements established by accrediting agencies and CLIA, notifying laboratory director and/or pathologists promptly of areas of concern. Communicates all procedural changes and posts for staff to review.
  • Sets challenging and productive goals for team, keeps team accountable for actions, provides leadership and motivation, provides resources and support, uses checkpoints and data to track progress, sets up systems and processes to measure results.
  • Manages a fair workload, volunteers for additional work, prioritizes tasks, develops good work procedures, manages time well, handles information flow.
  • Acts as a liaison between staff, physicians, and public through individual or group communication methods and participates in hospital and laboratory quality assurance goals.
  • Ensures good balance between workload and department specific productivity goals is maintained.
  • Reviews new tests and blood products and regularly reviews existing test platforms for cost, ease of use, and value. Ensures adequate supply of blood products is stocked at all times; new products are documented and stored according to manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Supervises performance of quality control procedures, noting trends and documentation of corrective action. Ensures correlations, linearity testing, proficiency testing, and test comparisons are performed as required, taking corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures adequate and timely instrument maintenance is performed and documented; employees in area are trained and have annual performance competency assessed; and assists with employee training and evaluations.
  • Creates a customer-focused environment through effective communication with others. Communicates in a professional, positive and respectful manner with patients, nursing units, clinics, and coworkers. Able to provide consistent excellent customer service in a variety of situations. Fosters and promotes relationship building and collaboration in order to support employee engagement and enhance a positive work environment.”

Job Qualifications
  • Education
    • Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology or a related science or meets qualifications for area of responsibility under CLIA regulations.
  • Work Experience
    • Three years’ experience in clinical laboratory setting. One year supervisory experience preferred.
  • Certification/License
    • Must meet CLIA guidelines for a technical consultant. MLS , MLT, BB certification preferred. If not registered, experience requirement increases to five years.
Mental/Physical Requirements
  • Close mental and visual attention required for sustained periods of time. Frequently works under stressful conditions due to time constraints and critical condition of some patients. Up to 50% of time spent transporting self throughout department and hospital or working at a lab station. Must be able to lift and/or carry up to 20 lbs.
Working Conditions
  • Constant exposure to hazardous chemical and infectious material. Works in air-conditioned environment with moderate noise level. May be required to work any time of day.
