Pierce Transit is Hiring an Apprentice Diesel Mechanic Near Lakewood, WA

This recruitment is internal only for current Pierce Transit employees. 
Pierce Transit is an independent municipal organization dedicated to fulfilling the mission of improving people's quality of life by providing safe, reliable, innovative and useful transportation services that are locally based and regionally connected.
We are currently seeking to fill one (1) full-time Apprentice Diesel Mechanic and will be building a 12-month future consideration list. Under the direction of an assigned Supervisor and/or Journey-Level Mechanic, incumbents will perform apprentice-level work assisting Technicians in preventive maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of compressed natural gas (CNG) and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. May also include additional work on hybrid and electric vehicles; performs other related duties as assigned.
An employee will be formally enrolled in the Coach Heavy Duty Mechanic program. This program is recognized by the ATU Local #758 and is scheduled to be completed within 8,000 hours. Continued enrollment and employment are subject to attending Related Supplemental Instruction (RSI) without compensation and maintaining the progress standards set by the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee. As experience is gained, duties will expand in complexity and the incumbent will assume more responsibility and independence. Specific work assignments are subject to close inspection during progress. Upon completion, assignments are reviewed for technique and adherence to safety and quality standards.
The following functions are not intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. 
Work under the direction of and assist journey-level mechanics in the following work processes:
  • Assist with the diagnosis of malfunctions and adjusts fuel, electrical, programmable logic controls (PLC'sand mechanical systems to specifications.
  • Assist with the repairs, adjustments, or replacements of integral parts of natural gasdiesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, drive trains and differentials, and lubrication, cooling, exhaust after treatment, and air or hydraulic systems.
  • Assist with the removal, rebuilds, and replaces automatic transmissions in buses, trucks and automobiles.
  • Inspects, adjusts, troubleshoots, and repairs bus door operation, air-ride systems, steering systems, and wheelchair lifts.
  • Makes bus changes throughout the Pierce Transit service area.
  • Notifies the journey-level mechanic of necessary repairs that had not previously been assigned.
  • Enters work order data on Agency personal computers and on handwritten work orders.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
  • Learn the methods, materials, tools, and standard practices related to the maintenance and repair of heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Learn the principles of diesel-powered engines; compressed natural gas (CNG) poweredhybrid and electric vehicles.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions followed in heavy equipment repair shops.
  • Learn to use jacks, wrenches, grease guns, hydraulic hoists, cleaning materials and other tools and other support equipment used in the service and repair of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work with other employees in a directed work team environment.
  • Ability to conceptualize required work through personal observation or a verbal description and determine what is necessary to obtain quality results.
  • Ability to perform computerized work order procedures.
  • Ability to pass a job-related examination; pass federally required drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to drive all job-related vehicles and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license and CDL as required.
  • Ability to read, understand and follow written instructions, work orders, equipment maintenance and repair manuals, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to write clear notes of work performed and status of repairs.
  • Ability to perform mathematical computations related to mechanical and maintenance work assignments.
  • A demonstrated aptitude to learn to perform the duties and responsibilities of the Journey Level Mechanic (JLM) as described in the JLM job description.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent. Must be at least eighteen (18) years old. 
  • Must be a current Pierce Transit Employee.
Licensing, Certifications, & Other Legal Requirements
  • Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license
  • Must obtain a Class B Commercial License Permit at the time of hire. 
  • Must obtain Class B CDL with air brake and passenger endorsement within ninety (90) days of hire.
  • Must maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
  • Must successfully pass the pre-employment drug testing and physical examination in accordance with federal regulations.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Demonstrated aptitude for industrial mechanic skills.
  • Industrial mechanical maintenance experience.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/CONDITIONS:
  • Must be willing to work any shift (assignment to swing shift, graveyard and/or weekends likely).
  • Subject to exposure to fumes, dust and high levels of vibration.
  • Subject to exposure to high noise levels requiring ear protection.
  • Subject to working near moving parts of heavy machinery and high voltage equipment where the use of appropriate protective/safety equipment is required.
  • Subject to working at heights and in adverse weather conditions.
  • Work includes indoor and outdoor environments.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Requires climbing, standing, bending and lifting heavy objects and working in confined / restricted and enclosed spaces.
