Pike Co Board of Commissioners is Hiring a Director of Public Works Near Zebulon, GA

Job Title: Public Works Director

Department: Public Works

Reports To: County Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Range: $70,000 - $72,820

Job Summary: The Public Works Director is responsible for the oversight, planning, and management of the public works department, including the maintenance, operation, and construction of public infrastructure such as streets, right of ways, and county vehicle mantienace. This role ensures the effective delivery of public works services to the community while adhering to budgetary constraints, regulatory requirements, and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Management:
  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to the Public Works Department.
  • Supervise and mentor department staff, including, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions.
  • Foster a positive and productive work environment, encouraging professional development and teamwork.
  • Planning and Development:
  • Develop and implement short-term and long-term plans for public works projects.
  • Coordinate with other city/county departments, government agencies, and community organizations to plan and execute infrastructure projects.
  • Ensure projects align with community needs and strategic goals.
  • Budget and Finance:
  • Prepare and manage the department's annual budget, including forecasting, expense tracking, and financial reporting.
  • Identify funding opportunities, including grants and partnerships, to support public works projects.
  • Ensure cost-effective use of resources while maintaining high service standards.
  • Operations and Maintenance:
  • Oversee the maintenance and operation of public infrastructure, including roads, and bridges.
  • Ensure timely and effective response to public works emergencies, such as natural disasters or infrastructure failures.
  • Implement and monitor preventative maintenance programs to extend the life of public assets.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
  • Ensure all public works activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations and standards.
  • Stay informed about changes in laws, regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to regulatory agencies.
  • Community Engagement:
  • Serve as a liaison between the public works department and the community, addressing concerns and providing information about public works projects and services.
  • Attend public meetings, such as city council or county commission meetings, to present project updates and gather community feedback.
  • Promote public awareness of public works services and initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, civil engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Extensive knowledge of public works operations, infrastructure management, and project management.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets effectively.
  • Proficiency in using technology and software applications relevant to public works management.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Certifications and Licenses:
  • Valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in both office and field environments.
  • Occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazardous work environments.
  • May require occasional evening, weekend, and on-call work.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform physical activities, including walking, standing, and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to operate office equipment and use standard computer software.
