The general role of the Field Technician II Fiber Optics is to string and maintain fiber optic cable which includes pulling, tensioning, stranding, and spacing lines. This individual will troubleshoot, maintain, and repair fiber lines. This position requires proficiency with new cable installs, removals, modifications, and repairs in outside plant locations to include telephone poles, underground services, and conduit. The Field Technician II is also responsible for terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of meeting customer needs and providing maximum operating efficiency. The work performed will be within communications and power spaces.
This individual understands each product and supports the improvement of operational efficiency and must be comfortable working in heights and confined spaces for this position.
What You'll Do:2-4 years of relevant Fiber Optics experience preferred Mastery of Field Technician I Job Duties o Safely perform work in communications spaces o Qualify to work safely in energized spaces o Participate in training for pole climbing o Operate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set) o Qualify to perform work from an elevated position in the bucket truck o Assist when needed to remove old hardware from poles and install new Provide roadway flagging
support for the operation to include obtaining Flagger Certification o Assist with worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspections o Assist with performing minor field repairs on equipment o Assist with stripping, cleaving, terminating, and testing cable o Learn Industry Standard coding for fiber optics o Become familiar with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer),
traffic identifiers, light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc. o Learn proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cables o Learn to perform ring cuts on live fiber without affecting existing services o Learn to read and understand manufacturer manuals and standards for operating, installing, and
repairing electronic equipment, product, and components o Learn to troubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issues o Install demarcation enclosures, switches, and other telecom equipment o Route premise cable both inside and outside of facilities o Assist in the completion of documentation to include record-keeping, billing, and inventory, etc. o Learn to calibrate fiber optic equipment out in the field according to manufacturers instructions Valid Drivers License is required Possess Underground Miner Card Experience with the following equipment: ladders, bucket truck, cable puller, and reel stands preferred Small equipment experience preferred (i.e. forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.) Flagger Certification Must be comfortable working at elevated heights and in confined spaces Ability to work effectively under minimal supervision Ability to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truck Ability to apply technical expertise, evaluate problems and implement best practices Possess verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism Compute basic math calculations and take measurements Ability to read and execute network drawings and splicing diagrams Familiar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, and Visio
