In support of the Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY)’s mission, the Registered Nurse (RN) will provide direct clinical care through a number of programs from family planning to surgical services ensuring patients receive professional services in a timely manner. The Registered Nurse plans, directs, and evaluates total nursing care for the treatment of women from puberty throughout the life cycle, in addition to male services. They also perform routine laboratory testing including blood draws.
Essential Functions:
Health Center Practice:
- Accurately records data in the electronic health record regarding the patient’s health history including obstetric, gynecologic, contraceptive, medical, surgical, family health, and psycho-social backgrounds.
- Performs routine vital signs and lab tests such as weight, blood pressure, urine, hemoglobin, pregnancy test, and venipunctures as necessary.
- In an objective, unbiased manner discusses pregnancy options with women and offers appropriate referrals and descriptions of services.
- May duplicate labels for contraceptive pills according to the orders written in the chart.
- Assumes legal responsibility in conjunction with PPFA for proper ordering, handling, and distribution of medications and supplies in compliance with State and Federal laws and with appropriate orders from the assigned clinician.
- Performs routine injections as directed by the clinician.
- Assists providers with abortion procedures and acts as a support to the patient.
- Sterilizes instruments.
- Monitors patients in the recovery room.
- Sets up and cleans procedure and utility rooms.
- Maintains appropriate stock of supplies in exam rooms.
- Performs quality controls as directed.
Counseling and Education:
- Provides information and counseling on reproductive services; abortions, sterilization, as well as family planning methods: oral contraceptives, IUDs, diaphragms, cervical caps, condoms, vaginal spermicide, sponges, natural family planning, etc.; coordinates follow-up visits with the clinicians as needed.
- Provides information and counseling in areas of health maintenance and reproductive care such as nutrition, infertility, sexuality, family planning, breast self-awareness, menopause, HIV antibody testing, and safe sex techniques.
- Learns and uses information about how the needs of diverse patients can be sensitively met (LBGTQ individuals, varying ethnic cultures/practices, rape victims, etc).
Accountability Activities:
- May participate in the quality improvement program; follow up and report all complications to the CQRM department.
- Accepts individual and joint responsibility for, participates in, and works to achieve productivity, customer service, and capacity goals as set by PPCWNY.
- Participates in the orientation of new health center nurses, providing an observational experience for medical and nursing students; may assist with nursing staff orientation and in-service education.
- Stocks rooms and ensures that needed supplies and equipment are on hand; contact the appropriate person(s) before supplies of any kind are depleted.
- Participates in affiliate initiatives.
- Works on other projects as assigned by the Health Center Manager, Director of Patient Services, or the Medical Director.
- Performs and/or consults on projects/studies as needed.
- Maintains an awareness of the organization's projects/initiatives as outlined in the annual plan and participates, as appropriate.
- May act as the resource contact for the distribution of information or ordering of equipment or supplies.
- Shows respect to patients and co-workers for differences in backgrounds, lifestyles, viewpoints, and needs in areas such as ethnicity, race, gender, creed, and sexual orientation.
Requirements:
Applicants must possess the following qualifications (or an equivalent combination of education and experience):
Education:
- Practical Nursing Completion, Diploma, or Associate’s Degree in Nursing; BSN preferred.
Experience:
- One year of nursing experience preferred.
- Experience with GYN care is highly desired.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
- RN with current New York State license.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with staff, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment; and ability to juggle multiple priorities are a must.
- Must have excellent communication skills (verbal and written), be able to work a flexible schedule, and travel to multiple sites, as needed.
- Must have a reliable source of transportation and a valid NYS driver’s license not in jeopardy of being revoked.

Work Schedule:
This is a full-time (40 hours/week) or regular part-time (24-32 hours/week) position, Monday – Friday with rotating Saturdays. Part-time days will vary, with 1 evening shift 10:30-7, Wednesdays, and rotating Saturdays required.
Benefits & Compensation:
At PPCWNY, we are committed to equitable compensation practices and transparency. In alignment with these efforts, the pay for this position ranges from $29.50 to $36.04/hour. Actual compensation will be determined by experience and other factors permitted by law.
