POSITION: Grassroots Organizer – St. Louis

STATUS: Full Time, Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Organizing Manager

SALARY: $18.00-$19.50/Hour

POSITION SUMMARY

The Grassroots Organizer – St. Louis (STL) will run grassroots programs to build volunteer power, move policy, and influence elections at the local, state, and federal level. They will work through both Planned Parenthood of the St. Louis Region and Southwest Missouri (PPSLRSWMO) and its political and advocacy arm, Advocates of PPSLRSWMO. Under the guidance of the Organizing Manager and the Director of Policy and Advocacy, the Organizer will plan and execute strategies to build and activate a network of supporters and volunteer leaders taking action for sexual and reproductive health, rights, and freedom.

This position requires evening and weekend work with a flex-time schedule as approved by supervisor, in-person events throughout the St. Louis region, with the primary work location being at the administrative office on Forest Park in the Central West End. Must have reliable transportation to travel frequently throughout the St. Louis Region, with occasional overnight travel. Required physical activities include work outdoors in all seasons, door-to-door canvassing, transporting up to 30 lbs, long periods on the computer and phone. This position may fulfill the cell phone reimbursement policy requirements. 

PRIMARY DUTIES PERFORMED:

Grow Planned Parenthood supporter and volunteer base in the St. Louis Region: St. Louis City and County, St. Charles County, Franklin County, and Jefferson counties. 

Meet numeric goals for new/returning volunteers, petition signers, and other metrics that measure supporters. 

Recruit, train, manage, and retain volunteers, volunteer leaders, and interns via frequent one-on-one, phone, text, and electronic communication.

Represent PPSLRSWMO at speaking events and within local coalitions. 

Build coalition relationships. Create opportunities to support and partner with ally groups and community leaders. 

Conduct Health Center Advocacy at the health centers based in St. Louis City and County, connecting health center visitors with advocacy opportunities. Recruit and supervise volunteers to do the same.

Identify and cultivate supporters interested in telling their own health care stories, developing spokespeople and documenting written testimonials.

Assist in creating a volunteer base that reflects the communities PPSLRSWMO serves, elevating and engaging marginalized and underrepresented groups.

Form volunteer teams that will carry out goals, educate their elected officials, and mobilize their communities.

Keep high-quality organizing data: maintain the supporter database, track metrics, and generate quantitative and qualitative report outs.

Engage and mobilize college students in the St. Louis Region.

Assist with fundraising, special events, and patient acquisition projects as requested. 

Draft action alerts, recruitment emails, letters to the editor, and other written materials. 

Protect access to care for Planned Parenthood patients through the legislative process.

Assist with planning and executing MO lobby days in Jefferson City, coordinate volunteer participation, and meet grassroots lobbying recruitment goals. 

Develop and lead strategies to further department goals with tactics like phone banks, canvasses, lobby visits, in-districts, letters to the editor, media events, and visibility events.

Ensure Planned Parenthood supporters are well represented in local and state politics.

Conduct voter registration and education campaigns in the assigned counties.

Implement electoral programs as directed by the Organizing Manager and the Director of Policy and Advocacy.

Adhere to and assure compliance with state, federal, and agency policies that ensure provision of the highest quality and most professional programs. 

Collaborate with other public policy staff on initiatives, which may be outside of the St. Louis Region, as requested.

Other duties as assigned.

Periodic travel to affiliate locations may be required

QUALIFICATIONS:

Related experience, paid or unpaid, in grassroots organizing, advocacy, and/or political campaigns 

Resourceful self-starter with a high level of creative initiative

Effective interpersonal communication skills, rapport-building, and emotional intelligence

Passionate about political advocacy and Planned Parenthood’s mission

Leadership experience, preferably involving volunteer recruitment and management 

Team player skilled at collaborating across teams, departments, and organizations

Effective written communicator able to create action-oriented content for various audiences

Commitment to equity, knowledge of diverse groups, and sensitivity and appreciation to cultural differences

Comfort and poise as a public speaker/trainer

Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines with a rapidly-evolving workflow

Must have computer literacy and ability to quickly learn new online tools

Residence/roots in St. Louis region preferred
