Job Summary:
The Orientation and Mobility Specialist provides individualized instruction to clients who are blind or visually impaired, helping them to achieve safe and effective travel in a variety of settings. This role involves assessing clients' needs, developing tailored O&M plans, and providing direct training in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assessment and Evaluation:**
  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations to determine the mobility needs and goals of clients.
  • Assess the impact of vision loss on clients' ability to navigate their environment.
  • Instruction and Training:**
  • Develop and implement individualized O&M programs based on assessments.
  • Teach clients orientation strategies, such as mental mapping, use of landmarks, and spatial awareness.
  • Provide training in the use of mobility aids, including white canes, electronic travel aids, and guide dogs.
  • Instruct clients on safe travel techniques for various settings, such as home, workplace, urban, and rural areas.
  • Collaboration and Communication:**
  • Work closely with other professionals, including vision rehabilitation therapists, low vision therapists, and educators, to ensure a comprehensive approach to client services.
  • Communicate progress and plans with clients' families and caregivers to support continuous improvement.
  • Advocacy and Support:**
  • Advocate for clients' needs and rights in various settings, including educational institutions, workplaces, and community environments.
  • Provide information and resources to clients and their families regarding available services and assistive technology.
  • Professional Development:**
  • Stay updated on the latest O&M techniques, tools, and best practices through continuous education and training.
  • Participate in professional organizations and conferences related to blindness and visual impairment.
  • Documentation and Reporting:**
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of client assessments, progress, and instructional plans.
  • Prepare reports for funding agencies, service organizations, and other stakeholders as required.
Qualifications:
  • **Education:** Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility, Special Education, Rehabilitation, or a related field.
  • Certification: Certification in Orientation and Mobility
  • Experience: Prior experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired is advantageous.
  • Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of orientation and mobility techniques and tools.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement individualized training programs.
  • Patience, empathy, and a strong commitment to improving clients' quality of life.
Working Conditions:
  • The position may require travel to clients' homes, workplaces, schools, and other community settings.
  • Instruction may take place indoors or outdoors, in various weather conditions.
  • The role often involves standing, walking, and demonstrating techniques for extended periods.
