JOB DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT: COMMUNICATIONS AND RELAY
DUTIES: Under direct supervision of relay journeyman for assigned duties and full supervision of the Apprenticeship Committee for educational and training purposes.
Assists as directed in the testing, cleaning, installation and maintenance of relays and related equipment on a Companywide basis. Works around energized equipment.
Assists in calibration and testing of relay and control circuits and becomes familiar with the theory of symmetrical components.
Connects accessories and equipment to special testing devices to determine voltage under different loads, output and input of power at various operating temperatures, amount of current at different voltages, meggar tests, short circuits and open circuits; corrects and makes adjustments of moving parts, screws, bolts, nuts, and springs by using hand tools.
Accompanies supervisor to operation or installation areas and assists in maintenance, installation, testing, or inspecting as assigned. Performs various other duties such as pulling cable, terminating, installing, etc.
Performs various shop duties and may clean, adjust, repair, and calibrate electrical instruments and control devices such as voltmeters, recording gauges, relays, thermostats, motor starting boxes, and other delicate electrical and electronic apparatus.
Receives instruction on power shutdown procedures, working on energized equipment, tagging of equipment, and notification of proper operating personnel and performs switching operations.
Becomes familiar with the theory and application of electrical and electronic circuitry and control systems including transformers, reactors, rectifiers, power-stats, batteries, capacitors, resistors, tubes, solid state devices, etc.
Works with schematic diagrams, blueprints, and pictorial floor plan layouts.
Receives safety instruction and administers first aid to injured persons when necessary. Performs all duties in a safe and proper manner in accordance with safety rules and policies established by the Company.
Required by the Apprenticeship Committee to fulfill the third-year educational requirements.
Performs other related and assigned duties.
