Job Overview:

The Ready Mix Concrete Mixer Driver safely delivers quality ready mix concrete and other associated products to construction job sites, typically within a 20-mile radius of the plant.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

1. Inspect the truck on a daily basis in accordance with DOT and company regulations.

2. Fill truck with water by placing rubber hose into tank.

3. Safely and efficiently reverse truck under or pull truck through plant to receive concrete.

4. Use map book and knowledge of the area to determine best route to job.

5. Safely drive truck to job sites.

6. Backs up or pulls into job sites. Must be able to maneuver truck in very uneven ground conditions.

7. Place chutes from fender to main chute on rear of truck. When job complete, reattaches chutes to truck.

8. Wash truck with hose, brush and acid soap solution.

9. Climb ladder carrying various ready mix ingredients and add to concrete, i.e., fibers, color cement and admixtures.

10. Communicate with dispatcher through two-way radio system.

11. Complete all proper paperwork thoroughly and promptly.

Essential Job Requirements:

1. Must be able to take orders, instructions and guidance from supervisors and management.

2. Must be able to read, write and speak English.

3. Must be able to do simple math, such as addition and subtraction.

4. Must be able to handle cash and make change.

5. Must have valid DOT certified commercial driver’s license. Class “B” CDL with air brake endorsement.

6. Must have valid DOT medical certification or proof of exemption.

7. Must be able to pass DOT drug screen and comply with DOT and company drug screen policy.

8. Must maintain driving record in accordance with Federal and State motor Carrier regulations and company policy.

9. Must be able to interact with customers in a diplomatic, polite manner in varied stressful situations.

10. Must be able to operate vehicle and perform tasks in a safe manner at all times.

Physical Demands

1. This is moderately strenuous work. The driver must climb in and out of the truck approximately 50 times per day. The bottom of the seat is approximately 50 inches from the ground. The first step is two feet off the ground, with the second step one foot higher. Usually a bar is provided to help the driver pull themselves into the cab.

2. Trucks may have a clutch with five to six gears, which the driver must utilize for each stop and start when driving. The driver must have coordination between hands and feet to accomplish this. This process could occur well over 100 times per day. The amount of pressure used in pushing in the clutch with the left leg is around 60 pounds of force.

3. The driver may be called upon to work extensive overtime as weather and business conditions warrant.

4. Excellent defensive driving skills.

5. Ability to climb ladder to inspect loads of ready mix concrete, hang chutes, add ingredients to mix and wash truck.

6. Ability to lift up a ladder, carry and pour into the drum ingredients that weigh a minimum of 9 pounds to a maximum of 24 pounds.

7. Drivers must detach the main chute on the truck and attach up to four more chutes at every job. It takes 60 pounds of force to pull the chute down. The chutes are stored on the truck fenders with straps, which take 45 pounds of pressure to free the straps and 60 pounds of lift to lift and carry the chute. The chute weighs up to 50 pounds and must be lifted from the ground to the shoulder when returning the chute to its beginning position.

8. Drivers must wash their trucks with brushes and a hose.

Environmental Conditions

1. Drivers work outdoors the majority of their work hours. Weather conditions such as temperature, moisture and others have a significant impact on the job. Therefore, drivers must tolerate being exposed frequently to extreme weather conditions, such as, excessive heat or cold.

2. Job sites vary greatly due to weather conditions and location. The ground can be very rough, muddy or even icy. The driver must be able to tolerate, with or without reasonable accommodation, varied ground conditions in a safe manner.

3. There are high noise levels and significant vibration associated with this job. This is due to the mixer truck itself, other construction equipment and the actual job site. The driver must be able to tolerate, with or without reasonable accommodation, intermittent exposure to noise, vibration and other aggravating conditions at or around the operating sites.

4. There are other physical hazards that endanger health and life or cause bodily injury, such as, proximity to moving mechanical parts, environmental conditions, moving equipment and others.

5. There is exposure to cement, lime, concrete admixtures, dust, diesel fuel and other substances which may be toxic, explosive or cause burns or other injuries.
