Position Summary

Portland Community College seeks a student-centered Advising Specialist to provide asset-based academic advising and retention services within a specific Academic and Career Pathway within the Division of Academic and Career Pathway Guidance. Based on our anticipated needs, Advising Specialists will assist students in developing academic goals, long- and short-term academic plans, unofficial transcript evaluations, informal degree audits, evaluation of placement test scores, and providing information on credit and non-credit programs at PCC. A successful candidate will build and sustain positive relationships with faculty, staff, and administrators within a respective pathway. The successful candidate will develop and maintain consistent relationships with assigned students through ongoing engagement and outreach. A successful candidate will support PCC's commitment to equitable access to all students. In addition, they will be committed to holistic student support that addresses academic, work, health, and financial matters. They will ensure that students are aware of basic-need support and resources, including access to food, housing, and transportation. The successful candidate will be willing to support our students by leveraging various support modalities, including virtual, in-person, phone, and email. A hybrid work schedule will be provided, the advising position requires flexibility to provide services based on the needs of the students, which may include evening and weekend hours.

  • Understanding and application of student development, career development and student learning theories.
  • Understanding of purpose and goals of higher education within the context of a community college.
  • Understanding of equity issues and opportunity and achievement gaps at PCC and Community Colleges nationwide.
  • Demonstrate experience providing support and resources to students that helps them to meet and exceed their educational and career goals.
  • Understand and engage with cultural differences. Exhibit the relational skills to advise effectively across differences to support students.
  • Demonstrate experience leveraging current technologies to do proactive outreach, caseload management, and to foster communication.
  • Experience working collaboratively with educational staff and community resources to coordinate student support and engagement utilizing a student-centered approach.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two years of professional experience in an educational setting providing academic advising, career counseling, student retention/coaching, or related student services.

Starting Salary ExpectationsMinimum $52,961 to range midpoint of $67,383. Placement will generally not exceed the mid-point, based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for you, your spouse/domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age, as well as partial tuition reimbursement for full-time employees at other accredited institutions.
*Please note: Temporary Academic Professional employees are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.
Paid Leave: (Pro-rated by FTE for Part-Time Employees)
- Starts at 13.33 hours of vacation leave per month (additional vacation hours with years of services)
- 1 day of sick leave per month
- 12 holidays
- 3 additional personal leave days per year

Working Conditions and Physical RequirementsWork is performed in an office environment. Occasional evening and weekend hours required. Incumbents may travel to businesses or college fairs requiring the use of a personal vehicle.
